Introduction

Arthur Pendragon「アーサー・ペンドラゴン」 is the king of Camelot, holder of the Holy Sword Excalibur and the host of Chaos and the rightful King of Chaos「混沌の王, Konton no Ō」.

He is a supporting character in Nanatsu no Taizai, but became the main antagonist of the sequel series Four Knights of the Apocalypse.

In The Seven Deadly Sins, he's sixteen years old and has a very youthful appearance, with messy orange hair and a long cowlick that falls over the right side of his face.[2] Arthur also appears to be relatively short in height.

Arthur dons a set of full-body gold-colored steel armor with a unique helmet accentuated by three horns, two triple integrals, and a cape.[3] Later in the series, Arthur looses his right arm as it was devoured whole by Cath Palug.

While using his Chaos powers, Arthur's eyes become black while his irises become purple.

In Four Knights of the Apocalypse, he's thirty-two years of age and is clearly much older and taller, yet retains his youthful outlook nonetheless. He now wears new garbs befitting of his status as king, with light clothes with flower symbols in the middle of his shirt along with a new dark blue cape.

He's also able to make a new dark armored right arm with the symbol of Cath on its fist as reference of what happened to him years ago.

Personality

Arthur is a polite, young man who is still adjusting to his role as king. He takes his responsibilities very seriously, but usually undertakes them with a smile and has a very warm, and happy-go-lucky demeanor. Despite his outward appearance, it would be wrong to characterize him as immature or oblivious as shown when he was a child, he was fully aware that his older, adoptive brother hated and even tried to kill him, but hopes one day they could become friends.[4]

Sixteen years after the new Holy War, Arthur's personality has changed greatly. He became dark, arrogant, condescending, manipulative and somewhat tyrannical and psychotic.

As a result of the destruction of his kingdom and seeing the pointless death that the other races and their gods have left in their wake for purely selfish and prejudiced reasons, along with the newfound power of Chaos at his control, these have all taken a great impact on him and how he views the world.

Believing that the humans have suffered since ancient times due to the discrimination of the other races and from the massive casualities wrought in the wake of both the ancient and new Holy Wars, he rejects Meliodas', and the Kingdom of Liones' as a whole, belief that the five races can all live together peacefully and without prejudice. He instead believes that humans will always be lesser beings that the other four races will always see as mere prey and because of this, has developed a deep seated hate of the Demon, Goddess, Fairy and Giant clans, desiring to destroy them in order to save humanity from them and free Britannia for his race so it will finally become a land with true equality and peace.

His obsession with freeing humanity goes so far as to invade Britannia to force people to come to Camelot, even imprisoning and "re-educating" anyone who wishes to leave once there. He shows much less appreciation for the lives of others, even his own Holy Knights, being content for them to die in order to fulfill his goals.

History

Before becoming a king, Arthur was a simple child who was adopted by the former king Uther Pendragon and had an adopted older brother named Kay. Kay harbored a hatred for the young boy. Once, while they were children, Kay took Arthur's sword and offered to give it back to him if he crushed an apple with a stick whilst blindfolded and in the middle of a gorge on one of several platforms. Arthur completed this challenge with ease. Kay was furious at Arthur's skill and tossed the sword at him which led to Arthur falling down unfazed while Kay smiled. However, Arthur was saved by a strange Holy Knight who was shocked and amazed at how Arthur managed to be brave and fearless whilst falling to his doom. He was also impressed as to how Arthur forgave his brother, even telling him he would be a king instead of a Holy Knight. Arthur was shocked until it was revealed that he was Bartra Liones, the 11th king of Liones, as he wondered if he was never going to be a Holy Knight as the king of Liones and his two escorts, Slader and Hugo, left for a meeting with Uther.

At some point in time Arthur met Merlin, the Boar's Sin of Gluttony, who became his teacher.

When Arthur was 14 years old, a giant sword fell from the sky in Camelot, where people believed that it was a holy sword sent from God, and King Uther declared that whoever managed to pull it out of the ground out would be the next king. Every Holy Knight tried to pull it out, but they all failed until Arthur came and successfully pulled the sword, making him the new king of Camelot.[5]

Kay, seeing his future stolen before his eyes, tricked Arthur into giving him the sword and told his father that he had taken it. However, although Arthur decided to hide the it, Uther was informed of the truth by Merlin, so he punished his son by locking him in the dungeon. Arthur, despite his father's prohibitions, went to see his brother regularly, who, despite doing nothing but insulting him, was helped by Arthur who shared his food with him and even interceded with his father to have him released.

During the Introduction arc, Arthur is rumored to have just became the new king of Camelot by the drinking patrons at Boar Hat in the small town of Bernia.[6] When the Holy Knights' cup in Liones goes downhill, Arthur and Merlin decide to go to help and rescue king Bartra.

Abilities and Equipment

Arthur in the past carried a golden sword and was geared with golden metal armor.[7] Arthur appears to be a very capable combatant as he easily blocked Hendrickson's surprise attack and simultaneously dealt a counter strike, dealing a blow on the Great Holy Knight. Arthur's swordsmanship skill is far above that of an ordinary human, as Arthur was able to fight evenly with Hendrickson and had great speed. But Hendrickson knew that Arthur was holding back for reasons unknown.

Arthur appeared to already have a high degree of strength in his youth as shown by being able to pull the sword Excalibur from its stone with ease. While Arthur himself does not know the limits of his own power, it is said that holding and using the legendary sword Excalibur allows him to access its full potential.[8]

When wielding Excalibur, Arthur is empowered by the souls of all the master swordsmen who previously wielded the holy sword, and as a result he possesses full knowledge of different swordsmanship styles from the previous wielders of Excalibur and can use them with masterful ease. Arthur also gains a massive increase in speed and strength when wielding Excalibur, as shown when he was capable of fighting against Meliodas in his Assault Mode, Zeldris, Cusack and Chandler, even although none of them were using their full powers.[9]

He seems to carry a type of immunity or resistance to Commandments as Zeldris was curious why his Piety did not effect Arthur. He has also been noted by Orlondi to lack a presence which explains his skill in sneaking up on demons and dispatching them without ever being caught.

After being awakened as the "King of Chaos", Arthur obtains the power of Chaos, who chose to coexist within him. Unconsciously, Arthur was capable of altering reality yet didn't possess any conscious control over it at first unlike Cath, who showed immediate proficiency with the power after taking a fragment from Arthur's arm. But after overcoming Cath's illusion in their second fight, he was consciously able to manifest a mouth-like vortex to absorb Cath upon realizing how to defeat him and declared himself the King of Chaos, accepting his new power.

16 years later, Arthur power and control over Chaos has grown considerably, being able to share part of that power with his knights through the Chaos Staffs.

Arthur is able to bestow Magical Powers unto his Holy Knights, such as Teaninich's Summon Creature. Arthur has also placed "Curse Reversal" enchantments, built into those same Powers, set to kill his own Knights should they reveal secrets regarding his plans and Camelot.[10]

Weapons

  • Sequence「セクエンス, Sekuensu」: A longsword with a cross-shaped pommel and quillon. It possesses the ability to revert itself back to normal if it were to be broken.[11]
  • Holy Sword Excalibur「聖剣エクスカリバー, Seiken Ekusukaribā」: Excalibur is a divine sword solely of the Humans making, which was imbued and empowered with the souls of the master swordsmen from all throughout Britannia who have wielded it in past millennia. As a result, the wielder of this sword is granted full knowledge and use of all the different swordsmanship styles used by the previous owners. Arthur was able to fight Cusack, Chandler and Zeldris nearly simultaneously wielding Excalibur,[12] however, it puts an incredible strain on Arthur because he wasn't strong enough to wield it properly. It was soon revealed to be the key to awaken Arthur as the King of Chaos merging with him, letting him manifest it in a different shape at will.[13] After accepting himself as the King of Chaos and absorbing Cath, thus retrieving the other part of Chaos, he manifested it as a new form that released amazing magic power as stated by Meliodas.[14]
  • Carnwennan「カルンウェナン, Karunwenan」: A sword made by Arthur's Chaos powers which generates a new blade everytime it is broken.[15]

Power Level

After becoming the King of Chaos, it can be assumed that Arthur may possess a very high power level, though exactly how much is currently unknown.

Prior to obtaining the power of Chaos, Arthur's Power Level was stated as[16]:

Total Magic Strength Spirit
40,000 37,600 900 1,500

Relationships

Family

Kay Pendragon

Kay is Arthur's adoptive brother. Arthur appears to like Kay well enough and doesn't view him as a bad guy. Kay, on the other hand, seems to dislike Arthur and did not care if he died during their childhood. In the present, according to Gawain, the two brothers had chosen to cut their ties with one another, seemingly either against or on one another's side. However, despite this, Arthur notably allowed Kay to stay on the new Camelot, and the fact that he knew Kay was worried about Gawain seemed to indicate that he either still kept in touch with his adopted brother or simply kept a watchful eye on him.

Gawain

Arthur seemed to be both amused and irritated upon learning that Gawain was one of the Four Knights, and takes the time to casually admonish Gawain for leaving Camelot and causing his brother to worry so much. It should be noted that Arthur does not seem to bother attacking her in any way, unlike how he handled Percival and Tristan, when he arrived on Liones, indicating he might still consider her family to an extent.

Seven Deadly Sins

Merlin

Arthur and Merlin have a student and master relationship. It is unknown how they met but Arthur holds Merlin in high esteem and considers her an irreplaceable friend and valued teacher. They seem to be very close, with Merlin covering his eyes with her hand as Meliodas gropes Elizabeth and when Arthur is crying uncontrollably because he thought that Merlin had died and that he had failed to protect her.

Many years later, the state of their relationship is unclear, as the Merlin who is seen together with Arthur is nothing but an illusion created by him.[17] However, it's indicated Arthur might in fact have romantic feelings for her, as he reacted harshly when confronted by Guinevere for having his love unreturned.

Meliodas

Arthur and Meliodas appear to have a good relationship. Arthur seems to think very highly of Meliodas, seeing him as heroic and a skilled fighter during his battle against Hendrickson and Gilthunder. Arthur was so amazed at Meliodas skill and character that he offers him the rank of Great Holy Knight in Camelot which Meliodas accepts to Arthur's joy. Arthur was later disappointed when Meliodas said he will come to Camelot "when he feels like it" to help with Camelot's problems. Arthur's admiration continues to deepen as the story goes along. However, after discovering of Meliodas's betrayal, Arthur accepted the fact that Meliodas was the enemy. He stated that he would never forgive Meliodas for what he had done, and then tries to kill Meliodas. Yet now their friendship is rebuilt and is back to fighting together as comrades. Though by the time of the events of Four Knights of the Apocalypse they seem to be back to being enemies when they fought during the events of Chaos in Liones arc

Others

Nanashi

Arthur and Nanashi seemed to have an odd friendship since they first met as combat partners at the start of the Great Fight Festival. Although his attempts to befriend the foreign swordsman were met with indifference, Arthur have somehow managed to convince him help defend Britannia from the Ten Commandments.

Chaos

Despite not knowing of the entity until told of by the Lady of the Lake, Chaos itself has chosen Arthur out of all the Humans in Britannia as it's host and to act in sympathy with Arthur. Originally, Arthur was unsure and questioned if the entity even existed but as he saw himself creating new worlds, albeit unconsciously, Arthur believed that Chaos wasn't an evil power as long as he used it for good intentions and before devouring Cath, he accepts himself as the "King of Chaos" and promises to use Chaos for good and the betterment of others.
