"Iai"「居い合あい, Iai; lit. "Sword-Draw"」 is a Magical Power possessed by Nanashi.

Description[]

"Iai" allows Nanashi to cut almost anything with a single swing of his sword, creating destructive slash waves by rapidly un- and re-sheathing his blade. For instance, he can easily cut an Earth Crawler despite its protective mucus,[1] or split a Gray Demon's explosive dark beam in two.[2]

Techniques[]

  • "Iai"「居い合あい, Iai; lit. "Sword-Draw"」:
    • "Mujo no Taki"「"無む情じょうの滝たき", "Mujō no Taki"; lit. "Heartless Waterfall"」: An instantaneous vertical sword slash that creates a slicing shockwave against an opponent. The attack was potent enough to finely slice the breathed-out energy blast of a Gray Demon and kill the demon itself in an instant.[3]
    • "Hijo no Oroshi"「"非ひ情じょうの颪おろし", "Hijō no Oroshi"; lit. "Ruthless Highwind"」: With a simple horizontal swing of his sword, Nanashi generates a slash wave capable of cutting through several "buildings" of the Demon Realm around him.[4]
  • "Gedan"「下げ段だん, "Gedan"; lit. "Lower Stance"」:
    • "Onjo no Mizore"「恩おん情じょうの霙みぞれ, "Onjō no Mizore"; lit. "Hail of Compassion"」: Nanashi adopts a gedan-no-kamae stance, his sword held out in front of him, pointing down, before launching a series of flying slash waves.[5]
  • "Waki-Gamae"「脇わき構がまえ, "Waki-Gamae"; lit. "Side Stance"」:
    • "Shinjo no Kogarashi"「真しん情じょうの凩こがらし, "Shinjō no Kogarashi"; lit. "Sky of Sincerity"」: Nanashi adopts a waki-gamae stance, hiding the length of his blade behind his body, only the pommel visible, before performing an incredibly fast, forward sword swing that launches a powerful slash wave, which was successful in destroying Lancelot's Fairy Bow.[6]
  • "Ogi"「奥おう義ぎ, "Ōgi"; lit. "Secret Skill"」:
    • "Setsuna Jujisei"「刹せつ那な十じゅう字じ星せい, "Setsuna Jūjisei"; lit. "Momentary Cross"」: Nanashi creates a giant cross of light in front of himself, visible from a far distance, before performing an almost instantaneous X-shaped slash, unleashing it as an immensely powerful attack. Described as "secret skill",[7] that technique was powerful enough to once gravely wound Arthur Pendragon,[8] yet it proved powerless before Lancelot's Hazy Moon.[9]

  • "Iai" is an abbreviation of the word "Iaidō"「居合道, Iaidō; "Art of Drawing One's Sword"」, which is a combative quick-draw sword technique originating from 8th-century Japan. This art is evident from Nanashi's attacks, as he swiftly re-sheathes his blade after each attack, and some of the stances he has taken while performing them.
