Despite having the appearance of a child, Meliodas is actually much older, being over three thousand years old. He is exceptionally short compared to other characters, with messy blond hair and a pair of emerald eyes. He also lacks facial hair, further accentuating his adolescent appearance. Regardless of his stature and youthful looks, he is relatively muscular, possessing an array of well-developed abdominal muscles. He is often shown wearing an ordinary, clean white button-front shirt and a black sleeveless vest on top with a loosely worn tie. His Broken Sword's scabbard is held on by a green leather belt with gold-colored buckles. Without any socks, he wears a pair of black boots. His most distinctive trait is his Dragon symbol carved at the top of his left bicep, just below his shoulder.

When Meliodas was the leader of the Ten Commandments, he wore a white, sleeveless coat adorned by a batch of black X-shaped buttons from all around the high collar, black lining on the coat, a dark red color on the inside, and a coat's tail. He also had black pants with matching colored boots. Meliodas also wielded a large, yet sleek sword, but during his battle with Elizabeth against the Demon King and Supreme Deity it was destroyed.

During his tenure as the leader of Danafor's Holy Knights, Meliodas wore their traditional armor, much like Cain Barzad's. Ten years ago he wore a full-body silver armor with a unique helmet, like the rest of the Sins. He also wielded a dagger that appeared to be his Sacred Treasure. Meliodas was issued a wanted poster, like all the Sins were after being framed for the murder of Great Holy Knight Zaratras. The most current issue of his wanted poster does not accurately depict him but, coincidentally, does depict his brother, Estarossa.

After the Kingdom Infiltration arc, Meliodas sports a new outfit; a long-sleeved, high-collared white tunic over an undershirt, a pair of gloves, knee-length black pants, and black boots. This outfit is a bit more formal like a uniform with the "Boar Hat" embroidered on his back.

After his time in Purgatory, Meliodas now has seven permanent scars where his hearts are located and sports a new Black Mark similar to the one he previously had as leader of the Ten Commandments. He now wears the debut outfit he previously wore.

In his Assault Mode, Meliodas' outfit was made up of dark matter. It was composed of a vest-like coat that only covers his armpits, which flared out at ragged ends, and has a very high collar which is spread wide. Meliodas also has two wrist bands, made up off the same dark matter as the rest of his clothes. His pants are connected to his feet, and has a look similar to a bird's feet except it has five toes.

In Purgatory, Meliodas' emotions wears a V-neck blue vest, made with the skin of indigenous species, that has three silver diamond-shaped buttons; the vest covers his shoulders and slightly exposes his chest with a small up-turned collar, and slightly opens at the hem. The blue gloves and knee-length pants have a leather-like appearance to it, and both have the same diamond-shaped button on it. Meliodas also seems to wear shoes, rather than his usual choice; boots.

Personality

Meliodas' dominant traits are his frankness and his utter fearlessness, shown when he remains composed seeing the Rust Knight who was later revealed to be Elizabeth Liones.[3] Due to his horrible cooking, when his customers vomit onto the Boar Hat's floor, he instructs Hawk to clean up the scraps, and scares him by saying phrases such as "roast pig" if he complains, hinting he may roast the talking pig.[4] He is also shown to be very bawdy and loves to frequently tell jokes. Occasionally, he takes advantage of Elizabeth's naivety and gropes her breasts, not even ashamed of doing so in public or in front of her father. He also has a strong sense of justice and is willing to help people in distress. Even when he is severely injured, he tries not to show weakness, and stays strong in front of his companions. He holds resentment for himself, deeming himself a failure as an older brother to Zeldris due to the suffering he caused him.

Despite his title as the Sin of Wrath, he maintains the facade of a very calm person. However, if his companions or friends are harmed in any way, he is shown to be capable of extreme rage. He is also enraged when someone tries to take his sword, with this rage being capable of scaring even a Holy Knight[5] and causing him to leave a permanent scar on Ban's neck, despite his regeneration abilities.[6] It has been hinted that Meliodas is guilt-ridden over the fate of Danafor, saying that his sin was being unable to save the kingdom. Ban and Cain point out that Meliodas tends to be soft and naive, due to him never killing anyone, even someone like Guila, who was a serious threat to the group. Meliodas dislikes killing, preferring to be merciful.

Despite all of this, however, Meliodas' personality was once much darker and terrifying, as he was revered to as the vilest and most terrifying demon in existence and no other demon would dare challenge Meliodas when he was the leader of the Ten Commandments and heir to the throne. Although not much has been shown of how he was, Meliodas displays a harsh, arrogant demeanor towards any lesser demon, coldly telling Bellion to get lost and calling him a hinderance and not even bothering to give him another thought as he began his battle with Mael. He is not intimidated by any Goddess except perhaps the Supreme Deity, doing battle with them relentlessly each day and he also does not fear even the mighty Four Archangels, as he is aware of his strength dwarfing theirs and rivaling, if not, surpassing even the mightiest and the fact that even they fear him, as shown by how he does not at all look fazed at the idea of battling Mael. However, even while in such a state, Meliodas still had doubts on the war but due to his loyalty to his father, he never once faltered whenever doing battle with the Goddesses. His angry reaction when the Demon King called him a destroyer for his plans to make his true self King of the Demons strongly implies that even in his prime, his father was still more demonic than he ever was. In the end, it was this aspect that allowed him to fall in love with Elizabeth and eventually abandon the Demons for her, choosing to stop the meaningless war. Whenever using his Demon Mark, Meliodas' personality changes to be similar to that of his old self, becoming cold, quiet, ruthless, and murderous as he kills and attacks anyone near him without mercy aside from Elizabeth. Despite being renowned as a pervert, the Seven Deadly Sins reveal that Meliodas never displayed any interest towards other females before meeting a grown Elizabeth.

After his time in Purgatory, due to having lost some of his emotions, Meliodas' personality changes drastically whenever he uses the black mark, becoming far more ruthless and at times even sadistic in his battles and wasting no time in his attempts to kill his former demon allies. He states that his outlook has changed and is merciless in his battle with Monspeet and Derieri. During his fight with Fraudrin, he sadistically toyed with his historic enemy using a clone with half his power to give Fraudrin false hope of defeating him, relishing his despair upon realizing Meliodas' true power. In the aftermath of the battle, Meliodas professes to Elizabeth that he is genuinely terrified of becoming that person again.

Beneath Meliodas' frank and bawdy demeanor hides immense amounts of emotional pain from having witnessed Elizabeth die over 106 times. Due to this, Meliodas has no fear of death and actually intends to lift his and Elizabeth's Curses, which he calmly admits will kill him for good, to free himself and Elizabeth from the torment and so they can be reunited in the afterlife.

Upon releasing his demonic powers in a desperate attempt to escape Melascula's Dark Cocoon Meliodas fully reverts to his old self as the leader of the Ten Commandments. With his old personality in control, Meliodas has been seen to be easily annoyed and angered, being far more brutal, sarcastic, sadistic and cruel than ever, showing visible pleasure and clearly mocks Escanor while easily beating him up. He also looks down on humans like most demons, as evidenced when he called Escanor a lowly human. He has also been seen to enjoy fighting, as evidenced by the fact that he toyed with Escanor rather than simply immediately going all out and killing him. While arrogant, he is not above complimenting his foes if they are truly powerful, as when he openly praised Escanor for putting up a fight against him.

Upon regaining consciousness after being defeated by Escanor, Meliodas regains his memories of Elizabeth and the Seven Deadly Sins. However, he has became solely devoted to breaking Elizabeth's curse and no longer cares about opposing the Demon Clan, even going as far as to ally with his former enemies and even become Demon King to accomplish it. With most of his emotions taken, Meliodas has gained a much calmer and collected attitude with no trace of his old frankness and is also much harsher and straight-to it, as shown when arriving on Camelot and confronting Zeldris and Estarossa, where he sternly says that both Elizabeth and the throne of the Demon King belongs to him alone and had no qualms pinning them down powerfully to make them submit to him. He does, however, retain some level of mercy towards the Seven Deadly Sins as rather as simply killing them, he offered them a chance to stand down and admits that the days he spent with the Sins were not all bad. He also offered Arthur, who he once acted as a mentor to, a chance to leave Camelot Castle on his own will, although he did so harshly, ruthlessly telling him that it is no place for humans like him anymore, and he has left the Sins, and had no qualms engaging him when he refused. He is not above making deals with others rather than simply forcing them to do what he wants or getting rid of them, as he promised Zeldris that he will fulfill Zeldris' desire if he agrees to help rather than just killing him ruthlessly or beating him until he submits. He also appears to still have affection and attraction towards Elizabeth, as he went out of his way to say when Estarossa said that he wants her that Elizabeth is his alone and patiently tried to make her understand that becoming the Demon King is the only way to save her, but he can now easily become rude at her, as he coldly told her that he felt nothing when she hugged him and had no qualms trying to force her to understand why he must become Demon King by saying bluntly that the only thing he had left is the promise he made to her and even told her openly that he considered her love for him to be imprinted by the Supreme Deity and not by her own will, a fact that he seemed bitter of. He apologized to Zeldris for being such a bad older brother, proving that his emotions were not completely gone.

History

3000 years ago

In the past, Meliodas was trained by Chandler and was the leader of the Demon Clan's Ten Commandments, bestowed with the commandment of "Love" and regarded as the one most likely to become the next Demon King, for his strength and ruthlessness. His reputation leads to him being greatly feared by the enemies of the Demon Clan with even the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan fearing and acknowledging his power. He stood as the Demon King's favorite son and true and worthy heir, renowned as the vilest, evil and terrifying, and the strongest demon in all existence.

At some point, Meliodas saved Bellion from the mightiest of the Four Archangels Mael. Coldly telling the demon to get lost and calling him a hinderance, Meliodas payed him not even a single glance and proceeded to battle and force Mael to retreat.

However, upon meeting and falling in love with the goddess Elizabeth, he chose her over his clan, abandoning his title as leader of the Ten Commandments as well as his commandment, officially betraying them in the process, as well as fleeing and killing two of the Ten Commandments, Aranak and Zeno, during his escape. Gowther presumed his leaving to have been done out of love. This power imbalance he created lead to the Holy War, a war he at some point decided to participate in, siding with his new allies of the Goddess Clan and their allies, the Giants, Fairies, and Humans. He fought alongside Elizabeth, Drole, and Gloxinia, as part of Stigma, until the Fairy and Giant kings eventually defected to the Demon Clan for their own reasons. At some point, he battled with his younger brother, Zeldris, a member of the Ten Commandments.

During the last days of the war, the leaders of the Demon and Goddess Clans and their own parents, the Demon King and the Supreme Deity, respectively, have had enough of the defiance of their children and worked together to punish Meliodas and Elizabeth. Personally confronted by his god-like father, Meliodas could do nothing against the Demon King and was effortlessly overpowered and killed alongside Elizabeth, who was confronted and equally hopeless against the Supreme Deity. However, their punishment was far worse than death. The Demon King cursed Meliodas with eternal life for the sin of taking the hand of one of the Goddess Clan, and betraying and killing his comrades. While not knowing why he survived unscathed from their battle, he saw Elizabeth dead.

With the war over, he wandered a shattered Britannia, and eventually came across a human girl from a savage tribe who looked like Elizabeth, minus the wings. Although she did not remember it, Meliodas became very close to her and one day she regained the powers of her previous life. When Meliodas told her about it, the girl recovered all her memories, soon though Meliodas learned of the curses they were been placed under, and promised her that he would work to release them, and watched Elizabeth die again.[7]

Since then, Meliodas continued to meet and fall in love with Elizabeth's reincarnations, getting to know 105 of them. Because of the curse of the Supreme Deity, Meliodas saw each of them die before his eyes.

Meliodas destroying Danafor

Kingdom of Danafor completely destroyed by Meliodas

He would continue this cycle for almost 3000 years until he went to and was employed into the service of the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Danafor. It was in Danafor that he eventually met a slave girl named Liz from an enemy kingdom of Danafor, later revealed to be a reincarnation of Elizabeth. Subsequently, sentenced to death, Meliodas set her free and personally offered to fight on her behalf if anyone objected. He later took Liz to his house where they lived together, often groping her chest to which she reacted violently. Later, Liz grew closer to Meliodas and became his lover, with him calling her the "most important person to him." However, Fraudrin somehow managed to escape his sealing and eventually attacked Danafor, nearly destroying it. Murdering Liz right in front of Meliodas left the latter enraged. Meliodas later apologized to Liz for not saving her, but Liz told him that they would meet again and to not forget what they fought for. After seeing Liz die, Meliodas' rage caused his immense power to go out of control. This explosion of power wiped Danafor off of the face of the world and critically injured Fraudrin, leaving him at the brink of death.[8]

After this, Meliodas found a baby that was the reincarnated Liz. The couple is discovered by the Great Holy Knight Zaratras who tries to help them, but Meliodas warns him to not touch his woman. When the baby Elizabeth was adopted by the king Bartra Liones, Meliodas requests to become a Liones' Holy Knight to stay close to her, convincing Zaratras of this by effortlessly defeating him in a sword fight. At some point, Bartra had a premonition of the creation of the Seven Deadly Sins. Therefore, using the prophecy as a guide, Merlin appears revealing that she already found all the members including Meliodas and herself. Meliodas decides to unite all of them in order to defeat the Ten Commandments in the event that the Goddess Clan's seal was ever broken.

At some point in time, Meliodas, intending to recruit Ban, arrived at the convict's cell where he was warned by the guards of Ban's immortality. Ban, believing that another execution was to be performed, stated that he would merely sit as he was executed, only to find out that a child had entered. Ban refused to join Meliodas, and, to Meliodas' declaration that he will then take him out by force, engages him in battle. Their battle resulted in Ban being punched out of his cell and Ban, having become extremely excited, requests that the battle be continued. Meliodas responds that in order to do so, Ban would have to join him, with Ban grinning widely at the invitation.[9]

Meliodas also recruits King after he was arrested for false crimes, telling him that he is a wonderful king for sacrificing himself for his people.

When the Deadly Sins were not yet formed, Meliodas finds Diane being bothered by a group of knights called the Knights of the Golden Wheats. After he arrives and knocks one out, both the knights and Diane tell Meliodas to leave. The Knights also say that Meliodas should not help Diane since she is a monster, to which Meliodas responds that it was wrong for them to pick on a girl. He defeats them all with ease after the xenophobic comments. Meliodas later asks Diane if she had been frightened, which surprised her since she was bigger than him, This eventually led to her falling in love with him due to his kindness and treating her like she was a normal person. After Diane got arrested by the Holy Knights, Meliodas frees her by the order of King Bartra. At some point during this period of time, Gowther is also recruited into the Seven Deadly Sins, however, the exact details of his recruitment, as well as whether he was recruited by Meliodas himself or by Merlin are currently unknown. Also, around this period of time, Meliodas and Merlin meet Escanor and convince him to join as the final member of the sins. With this, the formation of the Seven Deadly Sins becomes complete, with the Sins becoming the highest order of knights in the kingdom of Liones, answering directly to the king himself, and also to the Great Holy Knight, Zaratras, with the great holy knight being their one and only superior besides the King himself.

After the formation of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas and his team participated in various missions; a notable one being to purge the Kingdom of Edinburgh after it was invaded by the Vampire Clan.

He and the Deadly Sins head out to the kingdom to stop them from spreading further. However, Meliodas soon orders Diane, King, Gowther, and Ban to go on ahead while he and Merlin get Escanor to join the fight. The Deadly Sins and Holy Knights were surprised by Meliodas' decision to bring in Escanor. Thanks to Merlin's teleportation, Meliodas, and Escanor end up at Edinburgh. Meliodas carries Escanor's Sacred Treasure, Rhitta as Escanor was in his night mode. Meliodas tries to encourage Escanor to have more confidence in himself, but he soon started to cry and apologizes for being so weak. The two soon become separated and Meliodas meets Ren and Gelda. The three fought one another as Ren believed Meliodas to be his brother, Zeldris who sealed them away long ago. Gelda soon burned Ren alive and revealed that she knew Meliodas is not Zeldris. Revealing her story to the Dragon's Sin of Wrath, Gelda wishes to die, knowing that there's no purpose left for her in this world anymore since Zeldris is gone. He obliges, killing her with a massive burst of power.

At one point in time, the Sins were resting after defeating a Tyrant Dragon when Ban took an interest in Meliodas' broken blade and attempts to steal it. The latter uses his mysterious Enchantment: Hellblaze to give Ban a scar that can never heal despite his regenerative abilities. Later, Meliodas met Dreyfus and Hendrickson while eating after training with his fellow Sins and commented that their superior, Zaratras, was invincible. Hendrickson responds to the claim by saying he was being modest. Meliodas compliments Dreyfus' sword skill, which made the latter happy and begins to respect the captain of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Meliodas treaching Gilthunder a charm

Meliodas teaching Gilthunder words of courage

Before they were infamously framed, Meliodas was training Gilthunder until Gilthunder grew upset as he believed he would never become as strong as the Deadly Sins or his father, but Meliodas told him to ditch his negative attitude and Margaret came and told him "The Way of the Knight" creed. Margaret told Gilthunder that he should be himself, and not like the Deadly Sins or his father, and she believed that Gilthunder would be the kindest and strongest Holy Knight someday which cheered up Gilthunder. However, the next day Gilthunder came running toward Meliodas and told him to run away with the others. Meliodas was lost at Gilthunder and told him to explain everything, but Gilthunder told him something terrible was coming and if he told anybody, bad things would happen, and Gilthunder had no idea what to do. Meliodas told Gilthunder to calm down by hitting his head and asked him what he wanted to do, to which Gilthunder answered that he needed to protect Margaret, but had no idea how to do it. Meliodas taught him a charm which could cheer him up whenever he felt sad or terrible which was to say out loud that he was stronger than any of the Seven Deadly Sins. Gilthunder said it, to which Meliodas pointed out that he should feel better soon. Meliodas embraced Gilthunder, told him he should not cry, and if he were in trouble, he would come to his aid.

Holy Knights surrounding the Sins 10 years ago

The Sins surrounded by the Knights of Britannia

When they were still an active and commended group of knights, they supposedly summoned to an old castle after defeating the troll queen and destroying the Great Druid Altar. As the Sins were inside the castle, they discussed among themselves the reason behind the order they received as Meliodas complained that they should be attending Liones' National Foundation Day Festival and go drinking only for King to remind his captain that he was always drinking anyway. After Diane and Merlin speculated whether their superior might reward or scold them for their last mission, Meliodas had already decided that it was a scolding and reminded his team to attend the festival later, much to his team's chagrin. As they entered the room, they discovered the Great Holy Knight, Zaratras completely skewered to death. Soon, they were framed for the murder and then surrounded by over three hundreds knights of the kingdom. As the Liones' Holy Knights attacked the castle, Meliodas gave his team his last orders: to disperse and regroup later to figure out the cause of Zaratras' death, which everyone obeyed and separated while fighting their way out. In the aftermath, a little girl tries to help the Deadly Sins to escape, but end up getting heavily injured and leading to Meliodas unleash his rage once more, but soon knocked out by Merlin and sealed away his strength, but Meliodas soon forgot the event which leads him to suspect the existence of a traitor.[10]

Once Meliodas awoke, he came to meet Hawk within a cave that was close by to Camelot as the two ended up speaking with one another, where Hawk mentions that he felt like he used to fly in the sky, thinking he was a Dragon back in his past life when Meliodas thought he was Wandle. The two argued over Hawk name until Hawk mentioned a restaurant named Pig Leg where Hawk loved the leftover, which led Meliodas and Hawk to team up and work together since Meliodas can not work as a knight anymore. They decided to open a bar on Hawk Mama's back, named Boar Hat, after the restaurant Hawk mentioned, by having Meliodas sell his Sacred Treasure, which he felt bad about since King Bartra had given him this weapon. Since then, Hawk and Meliodas have become partners in business, Meliodas being the owner while Hawk is the cleaner as he could eat the leftovers.

Plot

Introduction arc

Meliodas ready to fight Twigo

Meliodas declaring his title

Meliodas is first seen in the Boar Hat, serving his disgusting meals, and then ordering Hawk, a talking pig, to clean up the vomit of his customers. Moments later, the infamous Rust Knight enters the bar, scaring all the customers who believed him to be one of the "Seven Deadly Sins", and collapses moments later, which reveals him to be a female. The woman soon wakes up, is offered food and questioned as to what she was doing in an armor. As she begins explaining that she is searching for the "Seven Deadly Sins", a few knights, having been informed by the villagers of the Rust Knight, demand that Meliodas and him come out. The young man and Hawk do so quickly, and anger one of the knights by the latter's pretending to be the Holy Knight. As the woman when flees towards the woods, they notice her and go in her chase. She is quickly rescued by Hawk and Meliodas, who ask for her to continue her answer. She then explains that she was searching for the "Seven Deadly Sins" in order to stop the Holy Knights, who, a few days ago, had orchestrated a coup d'etat, and had taken control of the kingdom; she also reveals who the Seven Deadly Sins are.[11]

Abruptly, the cliff the three are standing on is cut off by Twigo. Meliodas, however, rescues all of them. After he does so, Twigo notices the woman's earring, and then realizes her true identity as Elizabeth, the third princess kingdom. When the knight attacks them, Meliodas rescues her; he does so again when she gives up her life in an attempt to not involve Meliodas in her matters. Smiling, Meliodas reveals his name, and thus, his identity. As Twigo attacks them again, Meliodas repels the attack, and, declaring his title as the "Sin of Wrath", then again repels Twigo's attack with his broken sword, thus defeating him. Meliodas, explaining that he is also searching for the other Deadly Sins, offers Elizabeth to accompany him on his journey, an offer she tearfully accepts.[12]

Meliodas pulling Gilthunder's sword

Meliodas removing the holy knight`s sword

Hired as a waitress of the Boar Hat, Elizabeth is given a new set of clothes by Meliodas. She then questions him as to the crime he had committed and doubts whether he is an actual criminal. He initially jokes about the reason, but, in the end, he does not properly answer her.[13] Meliodas, Elizabeth, and Hawk soon reach Bernia, a village famous for its ale made from the village's famous river; they, however, they find the river to be completely dried. Upon finding a large crowd of men trying to pull out a sword, the three discover that the previous day, a Holy Knight had sealed the river's underground water supply, preventing the creation of Bernia ale, the town's primary sources of income. While the men unsuccessfully try to pull out the sword, a boy named Mead starts boasting about his friend from the Seven Deadly Sins, his comments only served to further enrage the villagers, who begin blaming Mead for their crisis.[14]

Meliodas takes Mead to Boar Hat and feeds him in return for information on his "friend" from the Seven Deadly Sins. This, however, turns out to be a hoax. Elizabeth, having learned that Mead was the one who angered the Holy Knight, manages to have him tell her the reason he did so, by narrating him an episode of her childhood. The four then watch from the window as two knights inform the villagers that if the sword is not removed by that day, taxes will be multiplied by ten times. As all the men, now including Mead, try their best to remove the sword, Meliodas, after drinking some Bernia ale, removes the sword with ease, in order to pay for his drink, which causes the dammed water to gush up like a fountain.[15]

Sometime later, Meliodas asks Hawk and Elizabeth to buy some herbs and fruits with the silver coins he hands them, for Elizabeth to gain some experience, since she, being a princess, has never seen a silver coin before, having used only gold ones. He also informs them that the day's main dish will be the Dusk Bison that has been acting as a pest and destroying people's farms. When the two return empty-handed, and explain how they lost the items they bought, Meliodas hilariously expresses his irritation.[16]

Meliodas catching Gilthunder's spear

Meliodas catching the spear

That evening, as the villagers celebrate in Boar Hat, Meliodas instructs Elizabeth to take her job lightly, since it was her first time being a waitress.[17] During the celebration, Meliodas senses Gilthunder, the aforementioned Holy Knight's, spear heading for the village, and goes out. Outside, he finds Elizabeth, who, having made many mistakes while waitressing, had run outside while crying. Encouraging Elizabeth, Meliodas stops the spear, but only after being pushed back a large distance. He then sends it back at Gilthunder, which leads to the destruction of Fort Solgales, and the Holy Knight's realization that the Seven Deadly Sins are still alive. The next morning, Meliodas suggests that they should leave the village immediately and continue their journey, since it would be more dangerous for the villagers if they stay there.[18]

Forest of White Dreams arc

The group meeting Diane

Meliodas and Elizabeth are led to a sleeping Diane

Having learned of even Holy Knights avoiding the Forest of White Dreams in Bernia, the group of three travel there, speculating that there might be a Deadly Sin hiding inside. After walking in the forest for more than three hours, and losing their sense of direction, the three find multiple copies of Hawk, all claiming to be the real one. Meliodas, mercilessly defeats all the copies, including the real one, but then discovers similar copies of Elizabeth. Each of them declares to do anything that they are real, and Meliodas then instructs them to jump as high as they could. All of them, except the real one, do so, since Elizabeth's panties had been stolen by Meliodas before, and she was embarrassed to jump. Defeated, the copies show themselves as Prankster Imps, and retreat towards a giant girl, who is revealed to be Diane, the Serpent's Sin of Envy. They then apologize to her for allowing a Holy Knight to come through, having believed Meliodas to be one.[19]

Immediately after being woken, Diane lifts Meliodas with her hand, only to cuddle him and cry tears of joy as soon as she realizes his identity. When Elizabeth introduces herself to Diane as traveling with Meliodas, Diane jumps to the conclusion that she and Meliodas are a couple, and throws a tantrum. Meliodas, after calming her down, explains to her the reason he and Elizabeth were traveling together. He then proceeds to begin a discussion about the day, ten years ago, informing her that he has almost no memories of the day, much to Diane surprise. Meliodas narrates the only memories he has, which end with one of the Deadly Sins apologizing to him. The narration leads Elizabeth to speculate the existence of a traitor, and Diane, to declare that she will help Meliodas. Few brief moments later, Hawk notices a gigantic thundercloud in the sky. A lightning bolt from it then binds all of them and the assailant is shown to be Gilthunder.[20]

Meliodas collapsing from his wound2

Meliodas having succumbed to his wounds

As Gilthunder walks towards them, Elizabeth explains Gilthunder's identity, and that he was a brother figure to her, but soon realizes his intentions. After Gilthunder leads her away, ending her interruption, he, pointing his sword at Meliodas' neck, expresses his desire to avenge his father, and also to prove that he has surpassed him. Meliodas and Diane easily break Gilthunder's immobilization spell themselves, with Meliodas instructing Diane not to interfere. Gilthunder attacks first with a lightning bolt; the Sin of Wrath repels the spell, only for the Holy Knight to dodge and move behind the latter, slashing him from behind and causing him to fall to the ground. Meliodas, seemingly in his last moments, asks for the whereabouts of the other Deadly Sins as his last words. Gilthunder answers to him the locations of Fox's Sin of Greed Ban and the Grizzly's Sin of Sloth King, the former being imprisoned in the Baste Dungeon, and the latter having perished in the Capital of the Dead. As he is told so, Meliodas quickly jumps back up, revealing that he had tricked Gilthunder into revealing the information.[21]

The Holy Knight refuses to stop their battle and repeatedly attacks Meliodas very quickly. He continues his attacks but is suddenly lifted by Diane with a hand. Gilthunder's attempts at escaping her grasp unsuccessful, Meliodas watches as Diane flings him out of the forest.[22] Meliodas later decides to head toward the Baste Dungeon, leading Elizabeth to object his decision, citing his grave wound as an impediment. Though assuring her that he is alright, Meliodas soon collapses.[23]

Baste Dungeon arc

Meliodas showing his hidden wrath

Meliodas with demonic eyes and the demon symbol on his face.

Meliodas is taken to Dalmary, a town near the Baste Dungeon, where he is treated by Dana.[24] Later, Dana has Meliodas drink some medicine he prepared himself[25], which is later revealed to have been a deadly poison, with Dana being revealed to have made a deal with Golgius. When the Holy Knight appears, and then tries to grab Meliodas' broken sword. Meliodas, however, is shown to still be alive, but with his eyes being mysteriously colored black, and with a strange black colored symbol on his forehead. As Golgius tries to pull the sword, Meliodas declares that he would not let go of it even if he dies and that this was the only way he could atone for his sins[26], while releasing an aura which frightens Golgius into fleeing.[27]

Meliodas seems to have returned to normalcy soon after this. When Elizabeth then questions him as to his wound, it is revealed to have already healed, something that puzzles even him. The three then go in Golgius' chase, soon finding him due to Hawk's sense of smell. Much to their surprise, Golgius immediately surrenders; Meliodas, however, notices the blades that Golgius discreetly threw, and blocks them. Soon after, Dana also finds Golgius and is killed in order to censor the two's deal, with Elizabeth, worried, running towards the doctor. As Golgius disappears after his attack is blocked by Meliodas, he confirms that his ability is teleportation. The three then escape, and soon enter an abandoned building, where Meliodas slashes his sword in the air toward the door, comically claiming that it was a magic spell. They wait inside when Golgius suddenly appears behind Meliodas, but falls for the Sin's trap - a cut on the floor of the entrance - and falls down to the bottom of the building. There, the Deadly Sin reveals that Golgius' ability is actually transparency, and how he discovered so. He then attacks his opponent at point-blank range.[28]

Meliodas declaring he will fulfill his promise

Meliodas declaring that he will fulfill his promise even if Elizabeth dies

Meliodas then questions Golgius about the person who had ordered him to bring the broken sword and Elizabeth, only for Golgius to escape due to a distraction. After he leaves, Elizabeth goes towards the dying Dana, who apologizes, explaining that he had only wanted to rescue his daughter and, lamenting his inability, dies. Elizabeth blames herself for this since if she had not found Meliodas, he would not have been put in danger, and Dana would not have died. Meliodas, in response, questions, whether her resolve to protect the kingdom's citizens, was as weak, declaring that he would fulfill his promise even if she were to die. He proceeds to inform her of the inheritance of the principles of an individual. Not long after, Meliodas and Hawk head for Baste, leaving Elizabeth in Dalmary due to the dangers. She, however, joins the two herself and, encouraged by Meliodas' speech, responds that though she has no power, she will continue to fight for the people even if he were to die. As they walk, they encounter Diane, who seems to have no memories of defeating Friesia's insects and leaving for Baste.[29]

Diane tries to recollect the events, and Meliodas then determines to rescue as Sennett was their main priority. Suddenly, he finds Diane to be attacking him; immediately realizing that she is under an illusion, he flees along with Elizabeth and Hawk, and, upon finding two civilians, walking nearby, takes them along. As the three, and the two frightened civilians, hide, Meliodas also falls under Ruin's hypnosis when he tries to look at Diane, which makes him see Ruin in her place the same way she sees Ruin in his. Thinking he is attacking Ruin, he attacks Diane, which begins their battle.[30] The battle is only stopped after Elizabeth manages to remove the origin of Ruin's illusion - the bell on his staff. He, enraged by this, charges towards the heavily injured Elizabeth, but is stopped by Meliodas, the illusion now having stopped.[31]

Meliodas protecting Elizabeth from Ruin

Meliodas tells the unconscious Elizabeth that he accepts her resolution, as Ruin attacks him. Ruin expresses his disbelief at the kingdom being frightened of a "small child". After two of Meliodas' punches, Ruin, exclaims that his soft fist would not even scratch his armor, and suggests that he draw his sword. When Meliodas does not, Ruin attacks with a barrage of punches; though they possess great power, Meliodas remains unscathed and breaks Ruin's armor. He is unfazed when Ruin then hardens his abdominal muscles as his armor and proceeds to easily defeat him with a punch that plunges his arm into the Holy Knight's stomach.[32] Later, when Diane, Meliodas, Hawk, and Elizabeth, who is sleeping inside Diane's bag, enter the dungeon, they encounter Sennett fleeing from Ban, as he appears soon behind her. Initially appearing very tense despite their reunion after 10 years, Ban and Meliodas are shown to get along very well, and greet each other with multiple high-fives at great speed. They then energetically start arm wrestling, the mere force of which begins destroying Baste. Both argue on their score on arm wrestling as the dungeon continues collapses. After it is fully destroyed, Ban states that he is glad to meet Meliodas again.[33]

The group, Ban, and the people who were imprisoned in Baste, including Sennett, return to Dalmary. Soon after, Meliodas enters Dana's house but is surprised to discover that Dana is mysteriously alive. The doctor reveals that he knows nothing about this strange phenomenon, and showing the deep wound to have neatly healed, points out that it was similar to Meliodas' sword wound, which had also healed and left a scar in a similar way. Sennett then interrupts, questioning the reason her father was nearly killed and she, imprisoned. When he answers, she tells him that poisoning Meliodas was not his fault, but the Deadly Sins' own fault, since the group were criminals. Dana, however, argues against, explaining that Meliodas never blamed him, and even selflessly rescued her. He then offers a token of his gratitude by a meal. At night, during the party, Ban is formally introduced to the bedridden Elizabeth. Not long after, Sennett notices crossing shooting starts in the sky and brings them to everyone's attention.[34]

The characters begin their journey towards the Capital of the Dead from Dalmary Town. Meliodas decides to not head towards the Kingdom's capital yet, but instead, they move further away. On the road, they are confronted by two Holy Knight apprentices, with one known as Andre. Meliodas initially deceives them by advertising their Boar Hat bar with Diane and Elizabeth being the two attractive waitresses. However, after Diane released her appreciations of being praised by hugging him, the knights realize that they are the Seven Deadly Sins. Suddenly, a Black Hound appears and quickly defeats the two knights. When Ban attempts to scare the creature, it grew bigger as a result of feeling threatened. In the end, Meliodas intimidates the Black Hound with his Broken Blade's powers.

Gradually, the characters arrive at a lonely village that is said to be closet to the Capital of the Dead. Meliodas decides to open the Boar Hat bar in order to earn some money for food and begin giving everyone roles. When Ban begins complaining about working, he reveals that he return Sennett her dagger, so they could not sell it for money. When everyone was about to begin working, they discover that Ban had escaped. At the Boar Hat, Meliodas tells a past story about Ban and King and states that they are an unlikely dynamic duo.

Meliodas and the rest begin searching for Ban and discover his fighting against King. He suddenly appears and interrupts the battle by knocking Ban on the head with a cup. Meliodas and Diane then easily notice King, although he quickly runs away. Back at the Boar Hat, Ban cooks a delicious meal and requests for the location of the Capital of the Dead from Ellen and her brother Luigi, who reveals that King has also requested the same thing.

The discussion about the Capital of the Dead continues and the characters are told that the village is actually the entrance. However, you cannot go there just because you desire to. Out of the blue, Ellen recites a riddle she always heard from her neighbor, a priceless memory shared with the deceased will open the path to the capital. The characters then begin searching for a method to enter the Capital of the Dead. Realizing that there are flowers on the ground, Hawk begins sniffing them when a sudden breeze wafted all of the petals. When the characters open their eyes, they discover that they arrived at the Capital of the Dead.

Ban suddenly runs away, leading Meliodas and the rest to follow after him. Whilst attempting to follow, they is blown away by an explosive strike from Guila but easily recovers. He then suddenly encounter the Holy Knight Guila who killed herself to enter the Capital of the Dead. She begins attacking when Meliodas immediately tells Hawk to run away with Elizabeth after realizing how dangerous she was. Meliodas catches Diane who has also blown away the same way. The two then begins attacking the Holy Knight together, before Guila provokes Meliodas to use his sword. In response, Meliodas draws his broken blade and utilizes Full Counter against Guila, who reveals that she knows the ability.

Meliodas and Diane were still fighting Guila, but she was too strong and Guila was about to use the power that she called Explosion, but she was stopped by Ban using his power, Snatch, but Guila used her Explosion to stop Ban ability. As the battle continues, the Sins were losing but then King arrives and offers to help them. Guila used her power once again to kill the Sins but King blocks that attack and decided to fight her alone which the other Sins agree to and sit down and watch the fight.

The Sins bodies were starting to disappearing and are about to go back to the living world. When they are back, they saw that Guila was there, but still in a near death state and had not returned yet. Ban said that they should kill her but Meliodas had an idea to do something to her. The Sins later left the village to continue their journey. King asks Meliodas who Elizabeth is but as always, he teased her, but then told him she is the princess which surprised King and decided to go to his fat form to show respect to Elizabeth but Meliodas does not notice the differences but the clothes. When King asks what happen to his Sacred Treasure, which Meliodas says that he sold it.

Not long after, Meliodas questions King the current status of the kingdom. Later, at night, inside the Boar Hat, Elizabeth somberly remembers her childhood; her spirits are lifted when Meliodas reassuring her that her family will be rescued soon. The next day, he decides their next destination be Byron, and then questions King about his statements the previous day. King, in response, reveals Guila was a mere low-rank apprentice the day before she fought them, explains the mysterious "New Generation". Meliodas, and three others, then enter Byron, where they also discover a new wanted poster for Elizabeth. All the residents unsuccessfully try to chase the criminals in order to hand them to the Holy Knights. After the four escape to a tower, Meliodas and King leave Elizabeth and Hawk to gather information, upon the princess' own urging.[35]

In the evening, Hawk tearfully explains to Meliodas and King about Elizabeth's capture by Griamore and Veronica. Though King suggests to formulate a plan, Meliodas, enraged, states that they are going then.[36] King, upon finding the inn where Elizabeth is being held, uses his telekinetic abilities to topple a cup on the table. While Griamore reaches out for it, creating a distraction, Meliodas enters the room, and very quickly defeats Griamore in an ambush. Later, Elizabeth thanks Meliodas, and, as the two walk, Meliodas' shadow is shown as the silhouette of a giant monster.[37] The next day, near the town of Vaizel, Meliodas explains about the town hosting an annual flea market, and about his speculations of a sacred treasure being sold there. Meliodas, Ban, King and Hawk head to the town, and there, are directed, by an alcoholic, elderly man, to the Fight Festival, whose rewards include Gideon, Diane's sacred treasure. Sometime later, after a brief skirmish with Taizoo, Meliodas, Ban, and the unwitting King, along with the other contestants, gather at the fighting ring for the preliminary round.[38]

During the preliminary, Meliodas is among the handful of combatants who overwhelm the rest and later qualify for the main tournaments. Afterward, Meliodas is assigned to battle Ban in the first round. Ban had entered himself, Meliodas and King as "Baan", "Meliodafu", and "Old Fart", respectively. Howzer almost recognizes the two but dismisses them as the Deadly Sins because of their obvious aliases, due to his naivety. When the first battle between Matrona and Griamore begins, Meliodas, along with others, ponders whether the former is Elizabeth when she reveals her similar appearance to the princess.[39][40] After Matrona wins, her hat falls down, revealing her facial similarities to Diane's. She skips toward the three Sins but is only greeted with Meliodas' question as to her identity, which angers her and prompts her to punch him and storm off.[41] She then answers to King's questions, explaining how she and Elizabeth were shrunk.[42]

Diane merrily states that she had wanted to surprise Meliodas, and jumps on him, expressing her elation at being held by him. She then asks Meliodas to grope her, as to how he often gropes Elizabeth. When she becomes upset at his refusals, Meliodas comforts her, explaining that he cannot act so to an important individual as her.[43] After King and Cain's battle, Meliodas and Ban ready themselves for their battle, which is the final one in the First Round.[44] As the battle begins, Meliodas compares the circumstances they are in currently to his and Ban's first meeting, and punches him. Regaining his balance, Ban exchanges several attacks with his opponent. One of Meliodas' punches sends Ban crashing into the ring, even breaking the Great Vaizel Rock. Soon, when Meliodas attacks Ban again, he himself falls down to his knees, Ban having used his ability, "Snatch".[45]

When Meliodas tries to retaliate, he seems to have weakened. King explains that this is since Snatch enables Ban to "rob" physical objects and also physical abilities such as speed and stamina; Meliodas is losing his stamina. As Ban overwhelms Meliodas, he then also starts "robbing" Meliodas' raw strength. After sometime, Ban decides to now rob all of Meliodas' abilities together, as otherwise, he would not be able to end the battle. While Meliodas attacks Ban, the latter steals the former's abilities, and manages to completely do so before he is defeated.[46] As he stands over Meliodas, Ban allows him to give up, an offer Meliodas immediately refuses. Diane theorizes that Meliodas is baiting Ban into delivering the punch, and will reflect the blow back with Full Counter. King quickly refutes this, explaining that Full Counter can only reflect "power" attacks, and not indirect attacks like Ban's.[47]

Meliodas playing with tiny Elizabeth

Meliodas toying with tiny Elizabeth

Despite Elizabeth's pleading, Ban punches Meliodas. In the midst of the resulting debris, Meliodas, who now mysteriously has a strange black colored mark on his forehead, and with his eyes colored black, similar to how he was when Golgius had attacked him previously, crushes Ban's hand, and proceeds to defeat him. After Diane's battle against Howzer is announced, Diane hurriedly hands Meliodas a shrunken Elizabeth, before leaving for the battle; the Sin of Wrath smirks perversely at the sight of a shrunken and naked Elizabeth.[48] While Diane enters the fighting ring, Meliodas teases Elizabeth. The princess then tries to question Meliodas as to why he acts perversely towards her, believing that this is since he does not consider her to be important; this is why she has been dejected for a while. He, however, does not hear her response, leading her to dismiss it, and mentally resolved to believe in him. She then proceeds to then have him promise her that he will not battle recklessly, as he did with Ban; Meliodas, however, mentally adds that he will only do so when she is nearby, hilariously.[49]

After Diane's battle, Cain and Meliodas enter the ring for their battle. After a brief conversation on whether Cain entering the Fight Festival was a coincidence, Cain, questions him whether he is Meliodas' son, and is greatly surprised upon learning that his opponent is Meliodas himself. Initially disbelieving, Cain, after accepting the fact, attacks Meliodas, and jumps back, declaring that he cannot forgive Meliodas, who betrayed the kingdom, its people, and his most important person. Meliodas then recognizes the symbol on Cain's shirt as Danafor's crest.[50] Questioning Meliodas as to why he destroyed the kingdom, and killed its citizens and Liz, Cain attacks him with a fireball; Meliodas does not evade them. Cain, finally ending his attacks, releases a giant fireball. Meliodas, answering the series of questions, states that he had tried to protect Danafor, but failed and that this failure is his sin. Facing his palm towards the attack, Meliodas completely disperses the attack. Cain recognizes this technique as "Counter Vanish", the use of which has convinced Cain of Meliodas' identity.[51]

Meliodas replies that he has come to remember Cain as well, and reaffirms Cain of his earlier statement. Cain delighted that the rumors about Meliodas' responsibility for the destruction of Danafor are false and glad to be rid of suspicions, forfeits his match. Finally, for the final battle in the tournament between Meliodas and Diane, or Matrona, both fighters enter the ring. Diane suggests to end their battle soon since they have already won their target: Gideon. However, they are then interrupted by three women, who cheer Meliodas in a very erotic manner. Diane, enraged at Meliodas' obliviousness on this, punches him as their battle begins; Ban had paid the three women to cheer erotically for Meliodas to anger Diane and have her battle Meliodas seriously.[52] Meliodas realizes Ban's scheme and exchanges a barrage of powerful attacks when Diane when she refuses to believe that she has misunderstood, with one of the attacks nearly pushing him out of the ring. Regaining his balance, Meliodas then jumps, and tries to attack from above.[53]

Diane, however, stops the punch and sending him flying, all the while slowly returning to her usual size.[54] As Diane grows, Meliodas escapes all of Diane's repeated punches by slipping through the cracks their battle has created on the ring. As they battle, the audience expresses its disapproval and dislike at the low seriousness of the battle. In response, Meliodas stops fighting, and declares his identity as a Deadly Sin, and also that the Sins will be capturing Vaizel. After King and Ban also enter the ring, Meliodas continues, threatening the civilians to leave Vaizel in one minute, lest I massacred.[55] A few moments afterwards, gigantic, and explosive flares rain down on Vaizel. As the assailants, Guila, Jericho, and another Holy Knight, land, the citizens are intimidated by Ban into fleeing, which makes Elizabeth realize the motive of the Sins' actions: they had forced the civilians to leave, so that they would not be involved in the battle against the Holy Knights. Meliodas, noting on the Holy Knights' strength, instructs King, Diane and Ban to separate.[56]

Soon afterward, Guila finds Meliodas. He accepts to fight her, but she retorts, boasting her increased abilities, and then releases several flares, which stop midway. When he jumps to destroy the flares, one of them suddenly explodes, which triggers multiple explosions. After the gigantic inferno settles, Meliodas, heavily injured, falls from a height.[57] After Jericho also defeats Ban, King confronts the two Holy Knights, and defeats them with great ease[58]; he then hands Elizabeth and Hawk the responsibility of watching over the two defeated Sins.[59] Hiding behind a building, Elizabeth hangs the pendant that Veronica gave her earlier around the unconscious Meliodas' neck, as Veronica and Griamore find her and Hawk. Veronica notices the pendant on Meliodas' neck, and then grabs Elizabeth's hand, trying to bring Elizabeth back to the capital of Liones. As Elizabeth tries to resist, Meliodas regains consciousness and stops Veronica, trying to convince her that he will protect Elizabeth.[60]

Angered further, Veronica triggers the Goddess Amber, the stone on her pendant that affects demonic beings. The stone shines brightly for a moment, and Meliodas then disappears.[61] Annoyed at Elizabeth still refusing to return with her, Veronica finally orders Griamore to use force.[62] Ban's attempts at opposing them are stopped by Jericho and Guila's arrival. While Veronica and Griamore are focused on Guila, Elizabeth manages to flee, with Veronica chasing behind; the princesses' footsteps trigger one of the explosive mines Guila had set previously, leading to Veronica's death.[63] Guila then reveals Hendrickson's goal: the resurrection of the Demon Clan, and tries to bring Elizabeth back with her. As the princess pleads for Meliodas to rescue her, the Goddess Amber darkens, and shatters, releasing a black substance, which collects and forms Meliodas, the right portion of whose body is completely colored black from forehead to knee, with spiral-like designs. Noticing Guila holding his broken sword, Meliodas sewers, and grabs Guila's hand before she is able to notice; he holds her hand, which is, in turn, holding his sword.[64]

As Guila screams in pain, Meliodas returns her amputated hand and lightly swings his sword to deliver a blow which knocks both Guila and Jericho away. Jericho immediately proceeds to utilize an Incantation Orb to heal Guila, when Meliodas continues to proceed attacking them. Losing conscious, he ends up slicing Ban in half as well as completely destroying the nearby terrain. He notices a worried Elizabeth and begins inspecting her through smell, causing her to gradually become confused. Acknowledging that she is not an enemy, Meliodas manipulates that black substance around his body to form a wing around his right arm, then heading off towards where King and Helbram was located. He interrupts the battle, knocking King away as he lands, and subsequently begins attacking Helbram. Preventing the Holy Knight commenting, Meliodas begins executing a succession of attacks, appearing to have gained the upper hand, when Helbram returns with a heavy blow. Helbram takes the opportunity and questions whether Meliodas was mixed from the start, as he appears to be fundamentally different from Guila and Jericho.

Appearing to be unable to comprehend what Helbram is asking, Meliodas continues the battle by manipulating the black substance again, but forming a gigantic blade instead, to send a series of slashes with aggressive killing intent. The Holy Knight deflects the strikes with ease, quickly moving behind Meliodas and attacking, thinking that his blow had accidentally split the Deadly Sin into two. Meliodas protects himself with the black substance acting as an armor and negating all the damage. He forms a wing again, attempting to reduce the distance between him and Helbram, when the latter uses the ability Hunter Wisp to create homing blast attacks, realizing that Meliodas has lost his Full Counter ability after they hit. Cornered, he molds two claws with the black substance and continues his attacks, only to be stopped Helbram who reveals his ability Link and stabs Meliodas with his sword.

Despite being told that Helbram possesses the powers of 20 more Holy Knights, Meliodas adjusts his posture and launches towards him, delivering consecutive bashes with the large claws. The 20 Holy Knights supporting Helbram via the ability Link are astonished that he has been overpowered, realizing that Meliodas' powers may still be increasing. Suddenly, Hendrickson appears before the gathering of the knights, lending Helbram a fraction of his powers, who consequently sends the rampaging Meliodas crashing into a wall with a single blow.

While knocked out, Meliodas was then saved by Diane with her sacred treasure Gideon and end up defeating Helbram, but as well destroyed Vaizel. When Meliodas woke up, Diane cuddles him in happiness. Later, Elizabeth ran happily to the saved Meliodas, but Meliodas was then punched by Ban due to being cut in half by Meliodas. Elizabeth then walks to the wounded Meliodas and hugged him for being alright, Meliodas was happy and told Elizabeth that she needs some underwear while grabbing her butt, leaving Elizabeth embarrassed and an upset Diane. Meliodas was then told by Ban of his sword fate which surprised Elizabeth and King of the missing sword, but Meliodas stated it was stolen and acting carefree which surprised Hawk. Elizabeth told Meliodas that sword was something important to him and said if it was really fine, to which Meliodas stated it is not fine, and it is a dire situation which surprised Elizabeth, but then Meliodas stated that if Elizabeth is alright, then losing the sword was not a big deal which made Elizabeth blush heavy and made Diane upset for not worrying over her instead to which Meliodas state that she is always fine.

The trio sneaks away from the Holy Knights and went into hiding to find out a plan. Ban told Meliodas that they should head to the Liones castle because, in a fairy tale, the princess always get locked in an underground prison. Meliodas agreed to the plan and head out to the castle as Meliodas promise to save Elizabeth. The trio then senses a battle going on to the south gate which Meliodas decided to head over there, thinking Elizabeth could be there.

Meliodas and Ban witnessing King and Helbram battling each other

When Dreyfus announced the citizens of the Sins' presence, Meliodas keeps running while Ban called the Great Holy Knight a bastard. As Dreyfus was under Gowther's Nightmare Teller, a past version of Meliodas appeared having a meal after training with his fellow Sins. He comments on his superior's skills and called Zaratras invincible only for the younger version of Hendrickson to claim that Meliodas is being modest. He then compliments Dreyfus' sword skill and tells him that he lacks the skill and ambition to surpass his brother while munching on a handful of mini-Hawks. Meliodas disappears after telling Dreyfus that it is already too late and asked the skewered corpse of Zaratras if he is right, thus beginning the nightmare on the Great Holy Knight. Meliodas and Ban stopped at their track when they saw giant roots attacking a small town where Diane, Gowther, and King are located. Ban asks Meliodas if he could sense it, which Meliodas nodded as he mentions that Diane's and Gowther's powers are fading, but King's ability is raised to invincible level.

Meliodas and Arthur teaming up

Meliodas teaming up with Arthur

Meliodas later saved Arthur's life when Hendrickson used Hellblaze on the king of Camelot and Meliodas used Full Counter to reflect the attack back at Hendrickson much to his shock and Meliodas saying that Hendrickson learned a very dangerous ability while he was gone and told him that he is going to get Elizabeth back. As Meliodas stepped forward and faced Hendrickson, he asked him about the location of Elizabeth, but Hendrickson refused to tell him. Meliodas immediately tried to kick him in the face, but Hendrickson was able to block. Meliodas followed with quick slash attacks, but his opponent was able to dodge them with ease. Hendrickson then tried an attack, which Meliodas blocked, but was sent back. Moments later, Gilthunder came down from a thundercloud attacking Meliodas, who was able to parry his attack. Both exchanged multiple attacks, and both blocking each one of them, but eventually, Gilthunder was able to kick Meliodas in the chest and send him back, where he was caught by Arthur. Meliodas thanked him and asked him if he can give him a hand in the fight. He also asked him for his name, as Arthur told his to him, he also mentioned he had heard of him and knows him, and then they both prepared to face Gilthunder and Hendrickson together.

As Meliodas and Arthur were preparing for their battle against Gilthunder and Hendrickson, Hendrickson notices that the battle from the other side was over and believed that Dreyfus had won the battle, while Meliodas believed that none of his members would lose so easily either. Hendrickson points out that Meliodas came rushing into the enemy stronghold with a few members of his teams and without any plan. Hendrickson points out that the Deadly Sins were nothing, but a former shadow of themselves and that saving Elizabeth is futile. Meliodas however, rush in with great speed and attack both Hendrickson and Gilthunder at the same time and said that even if he gives up on his life, he will protect Elizabeth. Meliodas end up fighting against Gilthunder while Arthur was amazed at their skills despite not fighting seriously, but still end up fighting against Hendrickson.

As the Meliodas fight was proceeding, he was able to push Gilthunder back, but then he used an attack summoning lighting-beast-like attack from the thunderclouds. Meliodas used his Full Counter to reflect the attack but understood it that this was time delayed attack and had to reflect the other two incoming attacks as well. At that moment Gilthunder got behind him and slashed him, but Meliodas was able to block using the sheath of his sword, Gilthunder immediately went in front of him and with an attack was able to knock Meliodas' sword from his hand. Gilthunder then used a large lighting attack on Meliodas, but using the unknown dark power, Meliodas with just his fingers was able to stop Gilthunder's attack easily. Once Meliodas stop Gilthunder's attack, he regains his sword back and went on with the fight, without the Black Mark. Meliodas and Gilthunder battle rage on and shows that both of them are equality match. Gilthunder sent Meliodas flying to a building, but Meliodas stop the crash by putting his feet inside the building.

Meliodas tossing Hendricksena and Gilthunder

Meliodas battling against Hendrickson and Gilthunder

Meliodas ask Gilthunder if he really wants to have a death match with him, which Gilthunder respond by using Meliodas old creed of The Way Of The Knight which the creed goes "your eyes are to discern evil, your mouth to speak the truth, your heart is filled with righteousness, and your sword is to purge evil" but Gilthunder now believe that the Deadly Sins have turned down that creed and betrayed the kingdom. Gilthunder claims that he is stronger than any Deadly Sins, but Meliodas just nodded and continued their fight with full speed. Later on, Meliodas started to overpower Gilthunder, while the latter tries to fight back with all his strength, but with no luck. Meliodas try to slice Gilthunder, but Hendrickson appears and struck Meliodas which the latter dodge in time, Meliodas was surprised to see Hendrickson and saw Arthur was defeated. Arthur apologizes to Meliodas for not buying time, but Meliodas told him to rest and leave the rest to himself. Meliodas end up battling against Hendrickson and Gilthunder at the same time, while Hendrickson said that they need to take down Meliodas since he is their greatest threat. Meliodas started to nearly overpower the duo, until the unnamed Holy Knight who kidnapped Elizabeth, appear and freeze him solid with Freeze Coffin, but did not last long. Meliodas defeating a monster near Margaret with his Divine Slayer

Meliodas begin to be overwhelmed by the Holy Knights trio, however, it was revealed by Hendrickson that Meliodas power is increasing instead of decreasing and the reason for Meliodas not fighting back against the trio is because Meliodas is heightening his utmost power and senses to unleash one decisive attack. The Holy Knights used all of their power together to finish off Meliodas before he could unleash his attack. Hendrickson summon Hellblaze, Gilthunder used Sword of the Thunder Emperor, and the Masked Holy Knight use Quad-Element Destroyer as Meliodas summon his attack, Divine Slayer. However, Margaret came running toward the battlefield to stop Gilthunder from hurting his hero, Meliodas. However, Meliodas spot something close to Margaret and use his Divine Slayer to kill an invisible creature like a demon that was next to her. As Meliodas grin of destroying the creature, the Masked Holy Knight attack hit Meliodas, heavily injuring him. As Hendrickson try to summon Hellblaze with his left arm, Gilthunder stops Hendrickson and sent him flying. Gilthunder asks Meliodas to leave it to him as it was waiting for this moment for a long time to have his revenge against his father's murderer. Margaret stood there, lost at the current event and the monster that was close to her. As Meliodas clean himself and walk toward Margaret, the latter asks how Meliodas knew about the monster, Meliodas explain that he realize something was off when they met in Forest of White Dreams and realize what is wrong with Margaret a few moments ago. Meliodas explain that Gilthunder would never compromise his sense of justice if his life was in the line, and realize that Margaret was in danger the whole time. Margaret started to cry and thanks Meliodas for saving them. The Masked Holy Knight ask what made him realize the event, which Meliodas explain that the creed and the way Gilthunder said he was stronger than the Deadly Sins was some kind of code or charm if he was ever in trouble which Meliodas give him ten years ago, and when Gilthunder said those word back in the White Dream, he knew he was being watched and someone being taken, hostage.

The Masked Holy Knight finds it an absurd lie, as Meliodas was fighting against Gilthunder with all of his strength, but Meliodas points out that Gilthunder put his life on the line for the woman he loves, and as such, he put his life on the line too, as he believes that it is how friendships work. Gilthunder proceeds on defeating Hendrickson, and afterward he, Margaret and Meliodas meet up with the other Deadly Sins. Upon seeing Meliodas, Diane holds him and frets over him. Meliodas ignores Diane's fretting and tells everyone their priority is to save Elizabeth.

Meliodas, however, was displeased as he believes Merlin was the one who knocked him out ten years ago and wanted answers from her but decided to ask her later as they needed to save Elizabeth and Bartra to which Merlin happily agreed and teleported the group to the Royal Chamber. The group was shocked to be at the location so quickly and noticed that the Dawn Roar were there as well. As Meliodas was about to destroy the door, Merlin revealed that it would be impossible to break as it was protected by Perfect Cube, as it came from the Demon World and would not be destroyed with either strong or weak attack. Merlin used Absolute Cancel and break the spell, freeing Elizabeth and Bartra. Elizabeth quickly embraced Meliodas as she had missed him, to which the latter comforted her by touching her chest, which annoyed Bartra. As Merlin was about to leave through the teleport, Arthur told her to wait as he went to Meliodas and offer him the title and rank of Great Holy Knight in Camelot as he believed that they were fated to meet. Everyone was surprised and shock at Arthur offer, but Meliodas accept Arthur offers to Elizabeth dismay as Meliodas believed that since the kingdom is saved, Elizabeth is freed, and Dawn Roar will take over the Deadly Sins job, they would be no need of him in Liones. Arthur was joyed to Meliodas acceptance, but Meliodas told him not yet as he needs to be in the kingdom to restore it, and he still has the Boar Hat to run. Meliodas then asks Merlin if she will rejoin the Deadly Sins who said not right away and teleport along with the sick Bartra and the depressed Arthur. King then ask Meliodas if he should have questioned her action in the past which Meliodas blame King for. Meliodas then told Ban that Elizabeth thinks nothing of sacrificing herself and for their promise to save Liones, knowing that, he can not die right. Meliodas told Ban that despite what he is doing, Ban will be his friend, no matter what, but like him, he got things that he can not give up on. Hawk then count front Ban, saying if he will really what the horn would say and that is not Meliodas his friend. Ban told Hawk that Meliodas was his greatest friend, but want Elaine to be back. Upset at this, Hawk said what if Elaine did not come back, he will lose his friend and Elaine might not be happy about this. Ban told Hawk what should he do, as when Elaine died, he was depressed, but when he met the other Deadly Sins, he kept himself distracted, but he still knows that he will be alone forever, be it in this world or next, saying this world without her is like Hell. Hawk did not understand Ban, but Meliodas said he understood Ban but said that they should put their fight in a hold until they solve the current matter as the Deadly Sins, which Ban said he understands.

Hawk agreed and gladly took Meliodas to save Elizabeth and because he is his friend. Hawk and Meliodas later arrive at Merlin's Old Castle where Meliodas was shocked to spot the bleeding Elizabeth and the deceased Dreyfus while Hendrickson knew that Acid would not work on Meliodas because of their "detestable power". Hendrickson explains that when he first met Meliodas, he felt malevolent, massive powers coming within Meliodas which was a greater power than Zaratras himself and could not get a single read on his thought which made Hendrickson feared, interest and admired Meliodas. However, Hendrickson admits that he now possessed the same power as Meliodas, until Meliodas quickly went pass him and carried Elizabeth without him noticing as he did it again to give Elizabeth to Hawk, so he could take her somewhere safe as he told her that both of them will run the bar again if she survives to comfort her.

Meliodas believes the situation was so bad, they have to bring in Escanor. Later he checks up on Diane's health with King. It is revealed then that she seems to have lost all of her memories up to the point of meeting Meliodas the first time.

While Meliodas and the others talk about Diane's lost memories, King kept Diane company until she started to lose more memories and ran off. Gowther soon revealed that he used Lost World on her to test if her feelings for King were stronger than she said, provoking King to punch Gowther. The others follow Diane who was heading to Megadozer until they are stopped by Monspeet fire ball which Hawk Mama eats, to the others surprise. While they could not sense Diane power level anymore, Meliodas believes she is fine and should focus on their training until they meet Diane again. Meliodas decides the first thing to do is head to Istar, the home of the Druids and the location of Meliodas strength.

Meliodas enduring his trial of nightmares

Meliodas' trial

While the Boar Hat traveled to Istar, Merlin revealed the reason for her to steal Meliodas power was that he could not control his emotions very well, and nearly destroyed Liones when a young girl got herself injured during the framing ten years ago, possibly being Elizabeth. Merlin then somehow steal Meliodas strength and give it to the Druids for safe keeping. Once they travel there, they were greeted by the head of the Druids, Jenna and Zaneri along with their bodyguard Theo. When they request them for training and Meliodas strength, they agree to help out while Zaneri led Meliodas and Elizabeth inside the castle to test them. Zaneri soon revealed to have feelings for Meliodas as she wants him to grope her and seem jealous of Elizabeth, while Meliodas show no interest in her. Zaneri then tests Meliodas by sending him through memory lane to the day Danafor was destroyed to see if he could control his emotion when Liz died. However, Meliodas repeatedly the day so many times, he soon started to lose it until he was inspired by Elizabeth and tried it once more, passing the test to Zaneri surprise.

King started to question Meliodas motivation and that if he was on their side which Meliodas refuse to answer as he believes King would not believe him anyway. After much battling, the two come to an agreement to work together while King keeps an eye on him. Once out of the training cave, Jenna gives back Meliodas strength which could be sensed by the Ten Commandments from afar. Meliodas soon request Merlin to teleport him to the Ten Commandments location to greet them and payback at Galand which she did, but only for ten seconds. Meliodas used the ten second to utterly defeat Galand and said his greeting to Zeldris which the latter and Fraudrin attempt to attack him, only for him to be teleported away before they connect.

After returning and revealing everyone that he made the Commandments to spread around the land, they soon scolded Meliodas for making them angry and cause havoc. However, Meliodas soon revealed that he made them split up to be easier to take them out then fighting them in a whole group which calm the group down, but King remain unease with Meliodas decision. Meliodas check out the others group training which led to Arthur having a cat-like on his head and Griamore to be a child again. Meliodas then see Hawk new form which he was stunned, but ignored him and soon ask Zaneri how Elizabeth doing in her trials. Elizabeth returned to the group to see how their training was. Meliodas ask Elizabeth how was her training. Elizabeth responded that she failed respectful to everyone surprise. After everyone's training, the Deadly Sins decided to head out to stop the Ten Commandments and find Escanor. Before heading out, Meliodas cheered Elizabeth up for failing her trial by saying it's okay to fail as he failed the trials a thousand of times and knows that Elizabeth has some crazy power hidden. This quickly cheers Elizabeth up and promise to be of help to them and soon restore their relationship.

While traveling, Meliodas asked how Gilthunder and Howzer training was and noticed they got stronger to Gilthunder joy. Meliodas soon got around to ask Hawk what happened to him while training which Hawk revealed that he got eaten by a Tyrant Dragon while being paired up with Oslo, but Hawk soon ate his way through the dragon stomach and somehow gain its abilities, even though they are weaker version of them. Hawk soon read Meliodas and was a shock to find out that Meliodas power level increase to 32,500 and was stunned to find out that Escanor is far stronger than Meliodas, but Meliodas soon revealed that despite getting his power back, he need to train along the way to get stronger as he became rusty.

Before King's departure, he questions how all the people there can be so loyal to Meliodas when he is clearly untrustworthy, yet Meliodas remains calm and says nothing. Elizabeth attempts to persuade King to no avail, he leaves and Meliodas tells him if something happens, to give them a call. The sudden disappearance of Ban's power causes Meliodas' to knock over a bottle of beer, whilst he was cleaning the bar. He mutters Ban's name, unaware of the events taking place miles away.

Meliodas congrats Ban reuniting with Elaine

Meliodas forgiving Ban

Meliodas knocked down a bunch of Earth Crawlers while meeting back with Arthur. When he cooked their meat, it tasted horrible and decide to save the scraps for Hawk. Later, Meliodas and Arthur meet with Ban, immediately have an arm-wrestling match with Ban wins easily. Meliodas forgives Ban who still relatively depressed about having tried to kill him back at Liones and invites him to come along to search for the Elizabeth and the others.[65] After the duo make amends with one another, Meliodas is able to sense that Elizabeth is on the other side of a large wall, with the two both nothing that he would reach her soon. Ban and Meliodas both release respectively powerful attacks, resulting in the structure between himself and Elizabeth's group being destroyed, but an entire open path to the other contestants and the hosts themselves. After Gloxinia fatally wounds Escanor and quickly brings him back to optimal health, he has Drole split the group into teams of two.

Meliodas vs

Meliodas battling the Ten Commandments

Ban and Meliodas find themselves working together, though they wait in great suspense as both Elizabeth and Elaine begin their match. Once it's over, the two themselves have a cakewalk defeating a pair of blue demons, all the while debating over who's girlfriend was better and not even noticing the fight was really started. Once King and Diane's matches are over, it's now fallen upon Escanor and Hawk to fight Jericho and Gowther. The latter's attempt to control Lion's Sin fails, as he ends up using Merlin as his own 'sun' and Rhitta's stored Sunshine power to attack Drole and Gloxinia. Taking advantage of this, Meliodas quickly rushes to attack the injured commandments. After injuring Drole quite grievously, the demon resorts to taking hostages out of his comrades, though this is ineffective as the Sin of Wrath removes the remaining two arms he has left in response. Controlling the tide of the battle for the majority, slicing through Drole's body and arms as well as manhandling Gloxinia, the former Fairy King's armor even breaking after landing a blow on Meliodas. It was likely the battle would have ended in his favor, up until the rest of the Ten Commandments had arrived on the scene.

Meliodas vs Estarossa

Estarossa stopping Meliodas' Revenge Counter

Once on the scene, he was a quick stare off against Zeldris, before attacking his younger brother with LostVayne, only to have his own arm caught off mid-swing. In retaliation, the Dragon's sin kicks the commandment away in order to retrieve his detached arm only to be stopped by his brother once again. After being put under a chain jail spell by Grayroad, he retrieves and attaches his arm once more after a brief exchange with Zeldris, smashing the ground to create a smoke screen and escape, only to be barred from doing so by said jail spell. After being attacked by Derriere's Combo Star attack, his wrists are battered harshly, only to be praised for surviving and soon after attacked by Monspeet. Emerging from the flames and slicing through the former's throat to no avail, he finds himself without his mark and hopelessly outgunned. After pleading for Dreyfus to fight Fraudrin's control, the demon feigns as such only to attack Meliodas with Break. Gloxinia being equally brutal in attacking with Vasquez, resulting in a large, powerful explosion that leaves the captain looking exhausted and once again with his arm blown off. Appearing to be defeated and scolded by Zeldris, Meliodas activates Revenge Counter, having gathered enough strength to frighten 8 of 9 remaining commandments with the possibility of either death and or defeat. However, this is quickly dispelled thanks to Estarossa's Commandment, and Meliodas is left powerless.

Meliodas' death

Estarossa then goes on to antagonize his brother for how he betrayed them, wishing to hear him suffer more whilst he continued stepping on him, Meliodas mouthing something though he seems to be unable to completely speak it. Then going in depth about how in the past, when Meliodas was the leader of the original Ten Commandments, he admired his strength and heartlessness, and that he could have become the Demon King. Melascula then steps up, desiring to eat Meliodas' soul for herself, wanting payback for what transpired with Escanor and Ban. The immortal himself shows up soon after this, snapping the demon's neck, removing her hearts, and destroying them effectively killing her. Despite his intentions, Meliodas, though with a smile, reprimanded Ban for jumping in so recklessly, with Ban remarking that idiots stick together.

After being assisted to his feet, Ban is soon after thanked for killing Melascula citing that he'd have done so himself if he had not for trying to take his brother's very soul. Though the distance between them is cleared quickly, having stabbed Meliodas in one of his hearts before either sin could react. Using an attack he calls Rebellion to summon six other swords, Estarossa explains that the upper echelons of the Demon Clan have seven hearts, and once all of a demons hearts are crushed, they die. Ban attempts to stop Estarossa, but he is ignored as Estarossa stabs one heart after another, finally killing Meliodas.

Defensive Battle for Liones arc

Meliodas reuniting with Elizabeth once more

Meliodas revived

One month after Meliodas' death, instead of moving on the Capital of the Dead, Meliodas is lingering in Purgatory. There he discusses his fate and his past self with the Demon King. The Demon King states that he will feed on Meliodas' emotions to regain his lost power and to return Meliodas back to his former personality. Meliodas refuses and attacks. When Meliodas finally returns to the living world, he finds that the Ten Commandments have been wrecking even more havoc. He saves Elizabeth just as Derieri was about to kill her, punching a large hole in her abdomen. He then apologizes to a crying Elizabeth for taking so long to come back.

Meliodas deflecting Derieri's blows

Meliodas fighting Derieri

Derieri interrupts them striking Hawk Mama, after chaining several Combo Star attacks. Hawk tries to intervene but is kicked by Derieri. This provokes Meliodas, who grabs Derieri by the neck and smash her into the ground, resetting her combos in the process. Meliodas starts to get relentlessly attacked by Derieri, however, Meliodas effortlessly deflects all hits. He knocks her down, resetting the combo again. Derieri continues attacking Meliodas in vain. Meliodas states a quote that describes how his old self would have approached the current situation. Monspeet intervenes in the fight to aid his partner, shooting his technique Kaijinryu at Meliodas, but before the attack reaches him, he kicks Derieri into the air and uses Full Counter, after activating his demon mark. The attack is reflected towards Monspeet and Derieri as well, seemingly destroying them.

After that, Meliodas joins the fight against Fraudrin. Fraudrin battles Meliodas, but even with his gigantification ability, the Sin overpowers him with ease. Merlin realizes that he is using a clone, stating also that his power level is now 60,000, and after activating his demon mark is even higher. Fraudrin exclaims surprised how Meliodas' power is similar to how was in the past. He tries to attack, but Meliodas swiftly attacks Fraudrin, piercing multiple holes in his body. Severely injured, Fraudrin shrinks to his normal size. He says that he and the other Commandments have been waiting to take revenge against Meliodas and the goddesses. Meliodas compressively pats Fraudrin's face, but then rudely pushes him to the side. Ban feels that there is something off about the captain. Meliodas remarks how Fraudrin is not an actual Commandment but rather a substitute. Fraudrin talks back saying that Meliodas cast aside the pride of the Demon Clan. Fraudrin then decides to wipe out Liones by immolating himself. Meliodas gets bored and tells him that he should just hurry up and die. Griamore stops Fraudrin from self-destruction. Fraudrin, moved, surrenders and tells Meliodas to kill him. Meliodas mercilessly kills him without a moment's thought.

Meliodas killing Fraudrin

Meliodas kills Fraudrin

Ban walks towards his captain, telling him that he's glad his partner is not dead and decides to have a toast later. Later Meliodas searches through the destroyed Boar Hat for food and beverages. Elizabeth found Meliodas and eats with him. She states how Meliodas is a generous and gentle person. Meliodas tells Elizabeth how Ban was looking at him with an unrecognizable look. Then Meliodas starts to describe the giddy feeling he had when he killed Fraudrin. He starts to cry and admits that he is scared of turning into the way he used to be. He continues to say that he will not be able to save Elizabeth if he does not turn back to his old self. Elizabeth comforts Meliodas and declares that she will never leave his side no matter what.

Meliodas visits Merlin and Escanor while she is taking a bath. Ban asks where Meliodas was because they could not celebrate properly and then apologizes for not knowing what expression to make. Meliodas tells him that there was nothing to apologize for. Ban insults Meliodas' vacant look, and he is punched by Meliodas so that he would shut up.

Meliodas and Ban searching for Gowther

Meliodas and Ban searching for Gowther

When King and Diane fell out of the sky, Diane landed on Meliodas, and after stating that they wish that the captain was still alive, Meliodas tells them that he still is alive. Diane and King are shocked, believing that he is a ghost, however, Escanor tells them that is the actual captain. Meliodas skips through a long story and said that he was revived, and then King replies, telling him that was too short. King apologizes to Meliodas, and then Ban and Meliodas check out King's wings. Meliodas congratulates him on growing wings and is then teased by Ban. Meliodas notices that there is something different about King and Diane. After Diane talks about the promise she made 3,000 years ago, Meliodas and Merlin become shocked. Meliodas questions if she actually said 3,000 years ago. After Bartra shows Gowther's "heart", he then runs away, and Meliodas and the other sins help Diane and King catch him by law number 4 of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Ban asks if Meliodas knew that Gowther was a doll, and Meliodas responds, saying that he also knew the person who made him and describes him as a powerful magician that the Demon King acknowledged. He continues to describe the commandment, Selflessness and why the Demon King imprisoned him. Adding on, he said that Gowther (the doll) was a substitute, modeled after his lover with a male body so that he would not feel any lust towards the doll. Since Gowther is a doll, it made it hard for them to locate Gowther. After Gowther gets his heart back, Meliodas states that they did not have to intervene.

Awaiting the unveiling of the newly rebuilt Boar Hat, Meliodas and Ban impatiently wait for Hawk to reveal it. Because they could not wait any longer, they both took off the sheet on the building. They raced to get the room that they desired, and since they could not decide who would get the room, they flipped a coin.

Meliodas helping Merlin

Meliodas helps Merlin

To celebrate Boar Hat being rebuilt and the reunion of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas, and the sins had a drinking party. Meliodas drank a barrel of alcohol while Diane cheers him on. When Merlin arrives, Meliodas notices something wrong with Merlin. With all the sins in the room, they toast to the reunion. Diane asks Gowther how his creator ended the Holy War, and Meliodas and Merlin questioned that. However, Gowther could not give a response. Meanwhile, Elizabeth keeps thinking about how there was an Elizabeth with Meliodas 3,000 years ago and questions it. Meliodas comes out of nowhere and harasses Elizabeth, asking her why she was staring off. He lets Elizabeth knows that she can ask him anything, which leads to Elizabeth telling him that she wants to talk later. After Elizabeth walks off, Merlin reestablishes the fact that Zeldris is still alive. Meliodas prioritizes freeing the people of Liones and liberating Camelot first before fighting Zeldris. When Merlin walks off and enters a room, she almost collapses and is caught by the captain. Meliodas then asks if Zeldris did something to her, however, she tries to avoid answering it. He sets her on the bed and tells her that he knows she's trying to protect Arthur. Gasping and begging Meliodas, she asks him to help because he is her hope.

Meliodas worried

Meliodas worried of Elizabeth's words

A while after Merlin passes out, Meliodas and Elizabeth walk to a mountain for their talk. He asks Elizabeth if she recalls playing on the mountain with him when she was a kid, however, she does not really remember that time. She asks him if he thinks it's a coincidence that Liz passed away 16 years ago, and she was born 16 years ago and that they had the same name. Meliodas remarks how they were not alike. She continues to say that during King and Diane's training, they met another Elizabeth that looks just like her. Meliodas becomes surprised that they know that and starts getting worried. Elizabeth sort of freaks out, but Meliodas tries to put it off as exhaustion. Elizabeth also informs him how Derieri mistook her for someone else, and then she tells him that she is ready to accept what he has to say. To avoid giving a real answer, Meliodas tells her that it does not ring a bell. Elizabeth saddened a little, tells him that she trusts him more than anyone else and leaves to the bar. Meliodas finally notices Ban and King above him, and Ban states how he screwed up. Meliodas asks what they're doing and if they heard the conversation, luckily, they did not hear it. Ban asks what caused trouble between them, and King teases him about needing to know how the heart of a young maiden works. This led to Meliodas punching a hole in Ban and then flicking King's head with his fingers. Meliodas thinks about Elizabeth's words and says he is not ready.

As soon as Elizabeth breaks the spell on Merlin, Meliodas busts through the door and asks what happened. He was quite surprised that Elizabeth broke the spell. Noticing that Elizabeth was worn out, he offers a back rub, but Elizabeth said she was okay, and she wanted some alone time. She starts thinking about Meliodas as soon as she leaves. Continuing with the mission, Meliodas and the others head towards the city of Corand.

Meliodas reveals that Elizabeth will die

Meliodas reveals that Elizabeth will die in three days

During the trip to Corand, Ban asks Meliodas to sit out the mission, and Meliodas allows him to. He acknowledges that Ban is doing because of Elaine. Ban tells him that she can not handle anymore and her death is inevitable, so staying with her is what he wants to do. Before Meliodas can finish sympathizing, Ban cuts him off to say does he understand how to feels to let your lover die again. Meliodas looks away in a sad expression. Hawk busts through the door, exclaiming that there's something wrong to Meliodas. Meliodas comes in the bar to see that Elizabeth is acting strange, and she informs him that Barzad was bitten by a werefox. Meliodas becomes shocked, realizing that she's getting her memories back. After the goddess symbol appears on both of Elizabeth's eyes, she faints. Not knowing what's going on, Diane questions if Zeldris' curse moved to Elizabeth. She is then corrected by Meliodas, who says that her memories of all her previous incarnations are coming back. After Diane informs King about Elizabeth's reincarnation, she is silenced by Merlin. She points out how the captain was being cynical to Elizabeth for ignoring her. Meliodas tells everyone that Elizabeth is going to die in three days. Everyone becomes appalled, and Diane asks if he is joking. Meliodas made up his mind and decides to tell everyone about his three thousand year journey. Meliodas reveals that his curse is immortality while Elizabeth curse is perpetual reincarnation, bestowed by their parents after being killed by them. He also reveals that the only way to break their curses would be for one to get the power off to the ones who cast it, or someone with equivalent power, like Zeldris. When Diane tearfully asked what will happen if he breaks the curses, as the rest of the sins are utterly shocked and sympathetic for the separated lovers, Meliodas sadly smiles stating they will die for real this time and be forever reunited in the afterlife as he had promised Elizabeth. He comforts Diane and asks her and the rest of the Sins to remain focused on their mission.

Meliodas prisioner of Melascula

Meliodas prisoner of Melascula

After saving Peliot and his village from demons as requested by Gowther, the Sins arrive at the abandoned city stronghold of Corand. Someone is waiting for them, and they see it is Zeldris, causing Meliodas to rush in blind rage at his estranged brother who tells him to "wake up" and stop being deceived by Elizabeth. Despite the other's protests, Meliodas follows through but ends up getting trapped in Melascula's Dark Cocoon, who created an illusion of Zeldris to lure Meliodas in and keep him from protecting the others from her and uses an altered version of her Vengeful Return to reanimate the deceased victims of Corand who were slained five hundred years ago, despite being only skeletons. They quickly deal with them, who are being powered by Meliodas' negative demonic energy and in desperation, Melascula attempts to force all the power into a single skeleton, but it's bones are destroyed from too much power.

Meliodas taunts her failed plan but returns it with an alternate plan. She uses her magic to allow the angry souls of the city's population to possess Diane, causing her to have red and bloody eyes from having multiple souls in her body and from being extremely hostile. They use Diane as their host to attack the others and even goes as far to hurt Diane's body, but is momentarily stopped when Helbram, the one who killed the people of Corand, offers them to have their revenge by destroying the helmet he possessed.

That is not enough to satisfy their rage and the deceased souls begin causing destruction but are finally forced out of Diane when Elizabeth steps in. Melascula is angered by this and tells Meliodas she will go out there to kill her personally. Meliodas is pushed against the wall by the thought of Elizabeth dying and is forced to let go of all his human emotions and return to his original personality in order to unlock his complete power, the Assault Mode. The cost is him returning to his true self from 3,000 years ago: the most savage-hearted demon in existence.

Meliodas overwhelms Escanor

Meliodas overwhelms Escanor

He destroys the Cocoon of Darkness and is now a danger to anyone and everyone. Escanor challenges him and Merlin puts a Perfect Cube around them to protect the others while Escanor attempts to pacify him. Meliodas, having lost his memories, tells Escanor that a human can not talk to the greatest warrior of the Demon Clan like that, angering him. The two fight and Meliodas has a big advantage over Escanor despite it being so close to noon. Meliodas seems to have won when he crosses Escanor with Lostvayne and releases a Hellblaze through his belly. Escanor manages to recover thanks to the sun. Although Escanor takes some confidence when his power increases to 114,000, Meliodas quickly incapacitates him from a single blow. Hawk reads his power level, which reached 142,000.

Meliodas suffers alongside Elizabeth

Meliodas suffers alongside Elizabeth

The fight is resumed and although Escanor manages to disarm Meliodas and beat him, he ends up defeating him by Full Countering his Cruel Sun and giving him a coup de grace. But Escanor uses all the saved power he has stored over the years just as he becomes The One at high noon. Meliodas tenaciously launches back into battle, attacking Escanor with Kami Chigiri, without effect. Escanor is finally able to defeat Meliodas in a single attack, rendering him unconscious, but causes even worse damage to himself.

Merlin is responsible for transporting Meliodas to Boar Hat with her telekinesis, although Elizabeth insists on healing him, Merlin says that if Meliodas tries to attack them. Already in the Boar Hat, Merlin is forced to leave Meliodas unconscious when he manages to recover from his wounds in battle, and then encloses him with Elizabeth in her Perfect Cube.

Prelude to the New Holy War arc

While Meliodas remained unconscious with Elizabeth inside the Perfect Cube, his old master Chandler appears suddenly, having gone in search of him. After he undid the Perfect Cube and incapacitated Merlin, Meliodas and Elizabeth are removed from Boar Hat by Diane. While the other Sins are involved in a battle against Chandler, Meliodas remains unprotected by Elizabeth, receiving one of Chandler's attacks during combat. In the end, Meliodas is returned to Boar Hat and taken away along with all the others by Drole and Gloxinia, who sacrifice themselves to stop Chandler.

Meliodas declaring that he will become the Demon King

Meliodas declares that he will become the Demon King

Already in the Boar Hat, Meliodas begins to release a poisonous miasma that affects others, so Elizabeth decides to take him outside. Without anyone noticing, Meliodas briefly recovered the constriction and stole Grayroad's Commandment while that was in Merlin's test tube.

When Chandler reaches the Boar Hat, Meliodas wakes up with Elizabeth still holding on to him as Chandler bows to him. While Ban tries to tell him that he is their comrade, Meliodas affirms that he remembers the rest of the Sins, Elizabeth, and Hawk and decides not to kill them. However, he claims that the Seven Deadly Sins are disbanded and for the shock of everyone, he declares that to save Elizabeth from the curse, he will have to become the new Demon King. After declaring a word of defiance to his father through the eyes of Hawk, Meliodas gives as his last words to his companions that the days he spent with them were not bad. Meliodas leaves with Chandler and Elizabeth, ignoring her words of not do such a thing for her.

Meliodas submits Zeldris and Estarossa

Meliodas beats Zeldris and Estarossa to submission

Meliodas arrives at the castle of Camelot and meets with Zeldris, who complains of the traitor returning to them and begins to argue with Meliodas over who will become the next Demon King. Their discussion is interrupted when Estarossa appears and says he has no interest in the throne itself and more of the fight over it but is shocked to see Elizabeth there. He instead decides he wants Elizabeth, to which Meliodas declares that both the throne of Demon King and Elizabeth belong to him alone. This triggers a confrontation between the three as Zeldris and Estarossa prepare to attack their estranged brother, but Meliodas is far too powerful for both of them together, even with the portion of their father's power that Zeldris has, and effortlessly immobilized the both of them. Elizabeth begs him to spare their lives, and he does so, with Estarossa complimenting him for returning to his old self but Zeldris is still very angry at Meliodas for his betrayal and claims he does not care about the throne and only wants the power to save Elizabeth and Meliodas does not deny the fact.

Zeldris attempts to attack him once more but Meliodas appears behind him and restrains him and whispers to his younger brother the reason for wanting the throne and Zeldris begrudgingly agrees to help Meliodas, to the shock of Cusack and Peronia. Agreeing with Zeldris, Meliodas affirms that he will not reach the power of the Demon King taking the power that he lends to Zeldris as initially planned. Zeldris begins to ask Meliodas if he plans to train to reach their father's level of power, but he complains saying there is not enough time and to save Elizabeth, he must use the most immediate solution: absorb all ten of the Commandments into himself. Revealing Grayroad's Commandment that he had stolen, in addition to those of Gloxinia, Drole and Gowther that Zeldris already had, Meliodas entrusts his brothers to go and collect the other Commandments.

Elizabeth slapping Meliodas with Ark

Elizabeth slaps Meliodas

Zeldris and Estarossa both go off to claim the other four decrees while Meliodas stays behind to protect Elizabeth from Chandler and any other demons who may try to attack her. In another room, Elizabeth begs Meliodas to rethink things and ask the rest of the Sins for help. He says this is the only way but reveals the horrible truth that once he becomes Demon King, he will most likely no longer be able to stay in Britannia. Elizabeth tearfully asks what the point of breaking the curse then is, at which Meliodas realistically points out that he believes that her love for him is imprinted by the Supreme Deity, which angers and saddens her and causes her to ask why he does not just find another girl to love. Surprisingly, Meliodas reverts to his human-like form and explains that Elizabeth is the only girl he'll ever love. She happily embraces him but Meliodas then returns to his demon form and bluntly says that he felt nothing and that the promise he made to her 3,000 years ago is all he has left. Elizabeth decides that she is going to team up with the other Sins to stop Meliodas from absorbing the Commandments and angrily slaps him into a wall with Ark before she runs off, promising to save him. Meliodas quickly runs in search of her, but is unable to find her.

Shortly after, Meliodas observes the light coming from the pact formed between Elizabeth and Ludociel, aware that the Four Archangels joined the battle, looking serious.

When Zeldris returns announcing his failure to recover Melascula's Commandment due to Merlin's deception, it reveals that the Four Archangels had been revived. Meliodas confirms it by affirming that Elizabeth and the Sins had allied with them, leading Zeldris to make fun of Elizabeth fleeing him. Meliodas says that none of that will matter once he has become the Demon King, as it would easily give him enough power to destroy all the opposers.

Arthur avoiding Zeldris and Meliodas

Meliodas and Zeldris fights Arthur

Something later, Arthur infiltrates the castle to retrieve the holy sword Excalibur and use it to free Camelot. However, it is intercepted by Zeldris and Cusack before reaching it. There, Meliodas reveals himself to the young king, telling him that this is no longer a place for humans but giving him a chance to leave. When Arthur asks him why he is with the demons, Meliodas reveals that the man he knew no longer exists. Devastated by the betrayal of the one he most admired, Arthur unleashes his fury by taking Excalibur. Meliodas and Zeldris shudder to feel the strange magic coming from the sword.

After surviving the Exterminate Ray de Chandler, Arthur manages to cut it in half with Excalibur, going on to do the same with Cusack. Surprised, Meliodas and Zeldris receive their attack as well, destroying a good part of the castle.

Once outside, Meliodas recognizes one of the techniques that Arthur used as the one belonging to the former swordmaster Craften, understanding that they are dealing with the power of Excalibur. Meliodas and Zeldris attack Arthur together, but he dodges them with speed, and they strike a powerful attack on both. However, both demons are unharmed.

After Arthur fell debilitated when not being able to support the power of Excalibur, Cusack made it in face and babbles on how to kill it. However, Merlin appears in the last minute saving Arthur with her Icicle Castle. Meliodas asks Merlin to return Melascula's Commandment, but Merlin tells him that just as he tries to save Elizabeth, his friends and his beloved are giving everything to save him. Merlin tells him not to forget it before teleporting along with Arthur and Cath.

Meliodas absorbs the Commandments

Meliodas absorbs the Commandments

As time passes and Estarossa does not return from his search, Meliodas decides to go ahead and absorb the five Commandments he already has, including Zeldris'. Meliodas tells Zeldris that he must deliver the other five before it is half a day after he has absorbed the others, in order to properly complete the ritual to obtain his power.

Meliodas asks Zeldris if he will be alright facing the Four Archangels without his Commandment, but Zeldris is more concerned that Meliodas will fulfill the promise he made to him, to which Meliodas affirms that he will fulfill it once he absorbs the ten Commandments and becomes in the Demon King. Meliodas proceeds to absorb the five Commandments, after giving Zeldris an apology for the kind of older brother he was.

Abilities and Equipment

Meliodas' skill in battle and power are legendary. He was the captain of the legendary Seven Deadly Sins and when he was a member of the Demon Clan, Meliodas reigned supreme once as the leader of the Ten Commandments and only worthy heir to the throne of the Demon King, greatly feared by the enemies of the Demon Clan and even other demons alike, considered to be the most powerful demon second only to the Demon King, so powerful that the demon Gowther stated his betrayal alone caused the balance of power between the Goddess and Demon Clans to tilt in the favor of the first and allow them to start the Holy War, forcing Gowther, as a last resort, to convert Mael, the strongest member of the Goddess Clan, into Estarossa of the Demon Clan in an attempt to regain the advantage over the Goddess Clan. Mael has noted that apart from himself, there were only two warriors in the Goddess Clan capable of rivaling him, those two being Elizabeth and Ludociel.

Like all members of the Demon Clan, he is capable of manifesting their mysterious power of darkness, which he can use and morph into various shapes for a variety of purposes, such as forming wings to fly, reattaching limbs, and mostly enhancing both his physical and magical abilities. He is also knowledgeable of demonic enchantments. He is most well-known for his skills with the sword and for his pure physical prowess, but he also has incredible magical abilities, notably his virtual immunity to magic attacks through with his ability Full Counter. An example of his immense combat skills was when he overwhelmed both the ancient Fairy and Giant Kings, Gloxinia and Drole simultaneously. The most noteworthy display of his outstanding fighting skills was when Meliodas's emotions, upon apparently letting out his original magic power, could, even if only for a matter of seconds, hold back the far more powerful and experienced Demon King. When recovering the power taken from him by Merlin, the amount of darkness released from the Goddess Amber was enough to blot out the sky, and the subsequent aftershock from Istar could be felt from Edinburgh almost 100km away.[66] Before the start of the series, his power was intense enough to destroy the entire Kingdom of Danafor. Merlin, feeling his power was too vast and dangerous for him to control, stole most of it before he could do the same to the Kingdom of Liones.[67] Even with most of his power taken, however, he still had a Power Level of more than 10 times the standard for a Holy Knight of Liones.[68] With his power returned, he is able to easily fight on par with and defeat members of the legendary Ten Commandments, even despite it only being a fraction of his original power during the Holy War.[69][70]

After unleashing his full demonic powers in a desperate attempt to break free of Melascula's Antan no Mayu, Meliodas regains his full power, after entering Assault Mode, massively increasing his physical capabilities and power. He easily outmatched Escanor in their fight despite his power increasing every second to the point that Diane said he was toying with the Sin of Pride, remaining almost completely unharmed by his attacks, being defeated only when Escanor reached the peak of his powers as The One. Even after being badly injured and almost sliced in half by Escanor, moments later, Meliodas was able to quickly recover, only being stopped by Merlin's timely interference. Even while unconscious, his aura was already so immensely powerful and dark to cause even Escanor as well as post-trial King and Diane to feel sick around him. Later, upon reawakening, he effortlessly pinned down both Zeldris and Estarossa, with not even the Demon King's power allowing Zeldris to move the slightest and soon subduing Estarossa completely as well, all the while also immobilizing Cusack. When attacked again, he effortlessly overtook and restrained Zeldris while simultaneously protecting Elizabeth from Estarossa. He also effortlessly survived unscratched by the attacks of Arthur wielding Excalibur and his aura was easily powerful enough to intimidate the spirits inside the holy sword to submission. His power is so great that it eclipses even the mighty Four Archangels, as Estarossa himself openly said that if he could not defeat Sariel and Tarmiel of the Four Archangels, he would have no chance to defeat Meliodas. Like his younger brothers, he also has the ability to remove Commandments with Admonition, having stolen Grayroad's when Merlin was unconscious. He also is capable of performing a ritual to absorb the Ten Commandments and is the only one apart from Zeldris able to survive taking in more than one Commandment, as shown when he has began absorbing five of the Commandments, although to completely absorb several Commandments would take more time to the point that five Commandments would take half a day to be fully absorbed. According to Meliodas once he has absorbed all the Commandments, which is half of the Demon King's power, he will become so powerful that he will be as powerful as the Demon King and thus making him capable of breaking the curse on Elizabeth.

Meliodas has been afflicted with a curse by the Demon King as punishment for falling in love with a goddess and killing and betraying his demonic brethren that revives him without fail no matter how many times he dies, whether via killing himself or getting killed. It additionally prevents him from dying of old age, effectively keeping him immortal. However, upon each revival, he slowly loses some of his emotions in exchange, slowly returning to his former self. The curse can last permanently and the only way to lift it is for someone with power rivaling that of the Demon King and Supreme Deity to lift it.

Abilities

Main article: Full Counter
  • Full Counter全反撃フルカウンターZen Hangeki (Furukauntā)」: This ability allows Meliodas to reflect magic attacks aimed at him, back at the enemy, but with much greater power; therefore, the stronger the opponent's powers are, the rebound becomes. A prime drawback is that Meliodas cannot initiate attacks himself. He is also incapable of reflecting attacks if the opponent does not allow him to read the timing/nature of their attacks. Physical, indirect, and continuous attacks can also not be reflected.[71] The Demon King stated that the technique is merely an inferior copy of Chandler's technique and that his original magic power is something different.
  • Meliodas's original Magic Power: Although currently unnamed, upon unleashing his true magic power, he was able to destroy the Demon King's arm.
Main article: Hellblaze
  • Hellblaze獄炎ヘルブレイズGokuen (Herubureizu); literally meaning "Hellfire"」: A mysterious ability displayed by Meliodas that allows him to generate black flames. The technique also has the additional effect of nullifying an immortal's regeneration, as shown when he used it against Ban.[72]
  • Assault Mode殲滅状態アサルトモードSenmetsu Jōtai (Asaruto Mōdo)」: This state is reached when Meliodas unleashes his demon powers to the fullest, achieving immense powers. This form also allows Meliodas to access his full power. According to Melascula, back in the days when Meliodas was in command of the Ten Commandments, even they were in fear of him while in this mode. The drawback is that it temporarily robs Meliodas of all his feeling and emotions, causing him to revert to how he was before his betrayal of the Demon Clan.
    • Kami Chigiriかみ千斬ちぎり, Kami Chigiri; literally meaning "Thousand Divine Slayer"」: Meliodas cuts his opponent with his sword a total of a thousand times in an instant.

Commandment

As the former leader of the Ten Commandments, Meliodas was the original wielder of the Commandment of LoveあいJiai」, which was bestowed upon him by the Demon King.[73] Those who would stand before him with hatred in their hearts will be rendered powerless to harm or inflict damage on anyone else. In order to ally himself with the Goddess Clan, he willingly abandoned his commandment during his betrayal of the Demon Clan. Due to Gowther's forbidden spell, the Demon King gave the Commandment to his supposed second son: Estarossa, who was Mael turned into a Demon due to the Commandment given to him and thus making it look like the former killed the latter.

Weapons

  • Giant Broad Sword: Meliodas used this sword in the Holy War 3000 years ago, also used it when he was the leader of the Ten Commandments. The sword it is at least twice the size of Meliodas. It was broken in the battle Meliodas and the goddess Elizabeth fought and lost against the Demon King and the Supreme Deity. The sword did not show any traits of being able to use an ability like a sacred treasure.
  • Liz's Sword: Once Meliodas regained his lover's sword, Liz, Meliodas started using it after his Dragon Handle was stolen. It also works in conjunction with Full Counter. It was broken during Meliodas' fight with an Albion.
  • Lostvayne: As a member of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas possesses a sacred treasure.[74][75] Lostvayne is a "demon-splitting sword" which he sold at a pawn shop in Camelot for money to fund the Boar Hat 10 years ago.[76] It is later returned to him by Merlin who is revealed to have purchased the sword and kept it safe all this time. Its ability Jitsuzō Bunshin is compatible with Meliodas' Full Counter allowing him to use it as much more dangerous levels.
  • Bone Sword: In Purgatory, Meliodas' emotions creates a sword, made with the bones of the indigenous species, with a single-edged long blade.[77] The blade is compatible with Meliodas' Full Counter.[78]

Power Level

Meliodas' power level increases in stages as the story progresses and is increased further whenever he utilizes his demon powers. Using Lostvayne, Meliodas can create a clone with a maximum Power Level of half of his own Power Level. Creating more clones will cause that power to be equally distributed among them.

Meliodas' power level at the start of the series, after having most of his power stolen by Merlin, is as follows:

Normal
Total Magic Strength Spirit
3,370 400 960 2,010

Demon Mark
Total Magic Strength Spirit
4,400 ? ? ?

Berserk
Total Magic Strength Spirit

After having his power restored, his power levels are as follows:

Demon Mark [79]
Total Magic Strength Spirit
56,000 3,000 50,000 3,000

After his revival, his power levels are as follows:

Total Magic Strength Spirit
60,000 ? ? ?

Total Magic Strength Spirit
142,000[80] ? ? ?

Relationships

Boar Hat

Elizabeth Liones

Meliodas and Elizabeth have a close and friendly relationship, with Meliodas enjoying his time joking and teasing her. He frequently "checks" her panties, and even stole them once. He also gropes her rather frequently and without shame. However, it is shown that he does care about her strengths and considers her as someone important to him. So far, Elizabeth (along with his broken sword) are the only things that will unleash Meliodas' rage if either is taken or hurt. Despite rampaging and losing consciousness in Vaizel when in his partial demon state, Elizabeth was the only one who was not harmed. Meliodas' care for Elizabeth grew to the point where he was madder at Elizabeth's kidnapping than his stolen sword and traveled to Liones at a great speed just to save her. It is unknown whether Meliodas is projecting an image of Liz on Elizabeth due to their resemblance, but it is strongly hinted that he has feelings for her as he says that if she was to die he would have no more reason to live. It was also hinted that he wanted to continue to run the bar together with her when Liones is free.

However, after the Ten Commandments were released, Meliodas started acting distant and cold towards Elizabeth, in hopes for her to stay away from him since the danger has risen, but this did not stop Elizabeth as she still wanted to be with Meliodas due to her growing feelings for him and desire to help him. This, however, changed as Meliodas started to be accepting of Elizabeth again after she helped him with his trial to regain his strength and soon returned to groping her. It also revealed that the reason Meliodas cares so much for Elizabeth is that she is the reincarnated spirit of Liz, Meliodas' dead lover. In the past, Meliodas was the reason Elizabeth survived the destruction of Danafor, even joining the Holy Knights of Liones to watch over her as she grew up, becoming a sort of knight for her.

Upon his return from the dead Meliodas and Elizabeth relationship seems to have grown with her embracing after defeating two of the Ten Commandments. However, he appears to still not be ready to tell her things about their past together. But, when Elizabeth later met Zeldris it is revealed that Meliodas and Elizabeth's relationship stretches across the 3,000 years the demons have been sealed. With Elizabeth being reincarnated 107 times and Meliodas always meeting her and watching over her.

After Elizabeth's curse is reactivated, Meliodas becomes more determined than ever to break her curse and protect and save her, even going as far as to unleash his full demonic powers and later becoming Demon King to achieve it. Meliodas in his Assault Mode as he is now still retains affection and attachment to Elizabeth, as he went out of his way to say that Elizabeth belongs to him alone and later patiently tried to make her understand that becoming Demon King is the only way to save her, but he has grown cynical towards the reason of Elizabeth loving only him, saying that it was the curse of the Supreme Deity, and can easily grow blunt at her, as shown when he coldly told her he felt nothing when she hugged him and that the only thing left for him is his promise to her.

Hawk

He and Hawk had a good and bad relationship. Though they argue frequently, they seem to care about each other. Meliodas has some form of trust toward Hawk as he trusted him to protect or watch over Elizabeth when the latter is away. When Hawk was killed by Hendrickson while protecting him, Meliodas was clearly furious and upset at Hendrickson for killing Hawk, showing that Meliodas indeed cared for Hawk.

Hawk Mama

Nothing is known about the two interacting, but Meliodas appears to respect and rely on her.

Seven Deadly Sins

Diane

Meliodas and Diane are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. Although Diane is a giant and therefore of humongous size, Meliodas still treats her like an ordinary girl and trusts her very much as a subordinate.[81] Just as he treats Elizabeth, he always enjoys teasing her and joking around with her.[82] He states that the reason he does not grope Diane is that he would not do that to someone so important to him, although this may only have been an excuse and to cheer her up. Whenever Diane wanted to be groped like Elizabeth, Meliodas showed an annoyed expression, but in the end still treats her like a dear friend. Even after developing feelings for King, Diane showed to still care a lot for Meliodas, only now viewing him as a dear friend, and now she openly supports his relationship with Elizabeth, which Meliodas seemed to be glad about. After passing her trial and learning about Meliodas and Elizabeth's curse, Meliodas comforted Diane who felt bad for not knowing, and in turn, Diane became all the more protective and supportive of both him and Elizabeth as her friends.

Ban

Meliodas and Ban are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. Meliodas is extremely friendly with Ban, and they have friendly fights frequently. They are very competitive and enjoy challenging each other at arm wrestling. Despite being great companions, Meliodas easily became angered when Ban tried to steal his sword.[83] When Ban accepted the request from the Goddess Clan to kill him, Meliodas was annoyed at Ban's reckless nature for accepting this, especially during their bad situation. However, once he found out the reason behind this, Meliodas accepted his death by Ban as he knows how he feels and might have done the same thing if he would've been in his situation. After their problems are sorted out, Ban and Meliodas return to their friendly relationship and respect each other highly. After Ban is reunited with his lover Elaine, Meliodas is shown to be very happy for Ban, so much so that he now jokingly teases their relationship the same way Ban does with him and Elizabeth. The two of them have even been shown to be competitive with one another in regardt to who's relationship is better and who's girl is more appealing, as shown during the Great Festival Arc, as the two spent the entirety of their fight dominating their opponents while debating over who's better, Elizabeth or Elaine.

King

Meliodas and King are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. When King is reported as dead and buried[84], Meliodas does not appear to be shocked, indicating that he is confident in King's powers and the fact that he is not dead. When King joins up with the group, Meliodas is shown to enjoy bullying him into doing things that he does not like to do. For example, Meliodas forces him to join the Vaizel Fight Festival. Overall, King appears to have deep trust in him as a friend and captain. Meliodas mentions that King was kind of like a mascot of the Deadly Sins, it is unknown if he meant it seriously or as a joke.

However, after finding out Meliodas is a former member of the Demon Clan and later finding out he relates to the Ten Commandments, King starts to gradually, but greatly questions his true nature and whether or not he is actually on their side. King's doubts in his captain seem further justified when Meliodas refuses to tell him about his past and instead questions his title as king of the Fairies, which angered King enough to attack and try to kill Meliodas with his Disaster ability. Later, King decides to be on Meliodas' side since Diane and Ban trust him, but threatens that he will kill him if Meliodas decides to betray them. After passing his trial and learning about Meliodas and Elizabeth's curse, King seemed to fully understand Meliodas and trust him once again, and even deeply regretted how he treated and doubted Meliodas prior to these events, which Meliodas forgave him for.

Gowther

Meliodas and Gowther are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. Despite both being members, Meliodas seems to have a friendly, but complicated relationship with Gowther. When they reunited with one another after 10 years, Meliodas did not seem to recognize Gowther's true appearance at all, stating that he had never seen him outside of his armor before. This implies that despite recruiting him into the sins, Meliodas might not have ever seen Gowther's true appearance until they reunited years later, which also implies that he might not have directly recruited Gowther like he did with the other sins.

Despite this fact and Gowther's emotionless nature, Meliodas is shown to be friendly with Gowther as they chat and Gowther, in turn, seems to respect him as a captain as Meliodas was the only one whose secret he did not tell anyone. It was revealed later that Meliodas and Gowther were once members of the Ten Commandments 3000 years ago, however, Gowther lost his memories of this time. It is also revealed that Meliodas was not only aware of Gowther being a doll, and his past as one of the commandments, but was close friends with his creator, yet had not revealed this fact to anyone, even Gowther himself. After Gowther began to regain his memories, Meliodas immediately ordered the rest of the sins to help Diane stop him from trying to erase his own memories, showing his desire to want to help Gowther regain his memories and emotions once again. After regaining his memories and emotions once again, Gowther's respect and friendliness towards Meliodas seemed to be more genuine than before.

Merlin

Meliodas and Merlin are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. Not much is known about their relationship but Meliodas was greatly shocked when he found out she was the one who knocked him out ten years ago. When the two finally reunite after ten years, Meliodas was a little hostile towards her, believing she is up to something, but soon forgot to ask her any questions because of Elizabeth. When Merlin offered to return to the Deadly Sins, Meliodas was fine with letting her return, but still felt annoyed when she uses someone as a guinea pig.

Their relationship has been heavily implied to be deeper than the rest the Sins, as Meliodas freely talked to her about demon related subjects, such as the Ten Commandments, unlike everyone else who either refused to answer or changed the subject. Eventually, it is revealed that Meliodas has known Merlin the longest out of any of the Deadly Sins, having known her for 3000 years, with both of them have known about the Commandments before the group was even formed. But despite that relationship, Meliodas still seems somewhat hostile towards her when she first arrived in Liones but soon agreed to form the Seven Deadly Sins. As a result of their long relationship, Meliodas and Merlin know almost everything about one another and seem to be both equally close and cautious towards one another due to how much they know about the other. Meliodas was the only one to notice Merlin's hastiness towards returning to Camelot as well as her injury from her encounter with Zeldris, showing concern for her as well as curiosity as to why she wanted to go back to Camelot so badly, and was surprised to learn that the reason was because she wanted to find King Arthur, showing that the two of them are closer friends than they appear to be.

Escanor

Meliodas and Escanor are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. Meliodas has a very high opinion of Escanor, as he sees him as the strongest out of all the sins, even admitting that he could be stronger than Meliodas himself. Escanor, however, seems to depend on Meliodas, especially during the night, as was shown when Meliodas was dragging the former's sacred treasure. Though Meliodas is irritated by Escanor's constant crying and doubtful behavior, he still encourages him to have more confidence in himself. Upon learning of Meliodas' curse, Escanor comes up with and recites a poem regarding both his and Meliodas' curses in an attempt to cheer him up, as he understands what it feels like to be cursed. Meliodas in return appreciates his efforts and thanks him with a smile.[85] Night Escanor respects his captain greatly and usually apologizes for being such a burden. Daytime Escanor also respects Meliodas, however, his respect for him is greatly downplayed by his pride and confidence in his own power. When battling Escanor in his assault mode, Meliodas seemed to be openly impressed that a human was capable of even keeping up with him in that form, a statement that the Daytime Escanor simply shrugged off, as he continued to look down at Meliodas and stated how he was the superior one in the fight, which prompted Meliodas to stop holding back against him and fight for real, overwhelming Escanor greatly until noon, when he became "The One" and defeated Meliodas in a single strike.

Holy Knights

Gilthunder

Meliodas and Gilthunder share a good relationship in the past. Meliodas teaches Gilthunder some form of swordsmanship, The Way of the Knight creed, and called him Little Gil in the past. Despite being on opposite side, Meliodas hold no grudge against Gilthunder as a Holy Knight and still sees him as the little kid he knew. Meliodas was proven right as Gilthunder true action and once he was freed, Gilthunder and Meliodas return to their old friendly ways.

Zaratras

Before the Deadly Sins were framed, Meliodas appear to respect Zaratras for his amazing ability and powers, calling him invincible. However, some Holy Knights believed Meliodas was just being modest.

Dreyfus

Before framing the Seven Deadly Sins, Dreyfus respected Meliodas a lot during their time, even become happy when Meliodas pointed out his skill over Zaratras.

Royal Family

Bartra Liones

Not much is known about Meliodas and Bartra, but it appears that Meliodas see him as an old friend. Despite being the king and Elizabeth father, Meliodas still sexually harassed Elizabeth in front of him without shame to Bartra's annoyance.

Margaret Liones

Meliodas and Margaret appear to have a good relationship in the past as she was a friend to Gilthunder and she admires the Deadly Sins. Meliodas tend to tease Margaret and Gilthunder relationship, saying she will be wearing the pants in their relationship like a wife.

Veronica Liones

Not much is known about the relationship between Meliodas and Veronica, however, Veronica seems to dislike Meliodas, believing he brainwashed Elizabeth into joining him and Meliodas does not seem to be fond of her as she tries to take Elizabeth by force. However, Meliodas does seem sad when Veronica died.

Danafor

Liz

Liz was Meliodas' lover when he was the leader of the Holy Knights of Danafor. Originally a knight from an enemy empire, she was sentenced to death, but saved by Meliodas. Initially, Liz disliked him and trusted nobody, however, she was soon drawn and charmed by Meliodas and became the person most important to him. Similar to Elizabeth, Meliodas enjoyed groping Liz, though she would often retaliate with violence, unlike Elizabeth. Meliodas greatly loves Liz, seeing her as the cheeriest and beloved person in his life, even went insane and rage when she died and even brought him to tears seeing her died hundreds and thousands of times over during his trials.

Wandle

Not much is known about Wandle relationship with Meliodas, but seem to have a deep bond of partnership with one another. However, Wandle seems annoyed with Meliodas whenever he leaves trash around.

Cain Barzad

Meliodas and Cain were old friends back in their days as Danafor Holy Knights. Not much is known about the two, but Cain seems to hold high respect for Meliodas, and Meliodas sees him as a good friend but does not seem to know his true name or face due to Cain wearing armor all the time.

Demon Clan

Zeldris

Zeldris is Meliodas' younger brother. They once had a good relationship, as Meliodas' emotions later stated that Zeldris looked up to Meliodas as the leader of the Ten Commandments and understood that he was almost sincere and honest to a fault and he also trained Zeldris on how to fight. However, he admitted that he could never comprehend why Zeldris was so desperate and worked so hard until he fell for Elizabeth and finally understood how it felt like to have someone precious to him. His betrayal of the Demon Clan made them estranged but while Meliodas has no hatred for him but has no qualms engaging him, Zeldris despises Meliodas greatly, as it was due to Meliodas' betrayal that the Vampires betrayed the Demon King and he was forced to separate with Gelda. While Meliodas feels guilty for Zeldris' loss of Gelda, Zeldris does not hesitate to attack Meliodas and sees him as nothing more than a traitor and an obstacle that must be destroyed in order to conquer Britannia but unlike the rest of the Commandments, it is also because of his personal grudge he still harbors toward his brother and most likely, said grudge has only grown stronger upon seeing the large hole on Edinburgh where Zeldris sealed Gelda, as Zeldris is quite likely aware that Meliodas has killed Gelda. Hence, Meliodas and Zeldris had no qualms engaging each other, with Zeldris even initiating an attack on Meliodas and not caring at all when Estarossa killed him. After realizing Zeldris was responsible for Elizabeth regaining her memories and reactivating her curse as a result, Meliodas was highly enraged and furious at his brother and later charged at him in a blind fury that caused him to be trapped by Melascula. Upon arriving on Camelot in his Assault Mode, Meliodas and Zeldris coldly greet each other and soon clash over Meliodas becoming Demon King. Meliodas proceeded to harshly say that he is the one who shall become the new King of the Demons to Zeldris, which makes Zeldris and Estarossa angrily attack him, with Zeldris saying that he will not let Meliodas out of all people get in the way of fulfilling his desire. After Meliodas displays the difference in power between him and Zeldris, he makes a deal with Zeldris that he will fulfill his desire if Meliodas becomes Demon King, resulting in Zeldris begrudgingly agreeing. Although Zeldris still mocks Meliodas on Elizabeth fleeing and him still being recognized as a traitor, they nevertheless work well in combat when fighting Arthur. Meliodas even asked for forgiveness from Zeldris for the kind of older brother he's been, which Zeldris seems to silently contemplate, implying that while they may be cold towards each other, they do have some desire to reconcile with each other.

Gloxinia

Not much is known about these two, aside from the fact that at one point in time they were comrades in arms. However, Gerheade's "death" (Gloxinia thought Rou had killed Gerheade, who was unconscious and seriously injured) led Gloxinia to join the Demon Clan and become one of its Commandments before being sealed away. Gloxinia and Meliodas seem to have some bond still, as they lamented, however slightly, about having to fight and kill one another. Regardless Gloxinia seems to respect his former comrade's strength, acknowledging that even now he could become the Demon King.

Drole

Drole and Meliodas, along with Gloxinia all fought with one another, during the Holy War. Drole's goal was to be the strongest, though Zeldris' easy defeat of him trampled his pride and made him become a demon, likely to attain more power. Even now as enemies Drole respects Meliodas' strength, speaking out loud that he could have become the Demon King.

Gowther (Demon)

Not much is known about these two, however, it was revealed that Gowther was one of Meliodas' best friends.

Chandler

Chandler is Meliodas' former master. Not much is known on their relationship while they were members of the Demon Clan, but even after his betrayal, Chandler still remains deeply attached and respectful to Meliodas. Meliodas, while apparently respecting his mentor for his great power, does not hesitate to command Chandler, as shown when he sternly told him he will not hear any objections from Chandler in bringing Elizabeth with him and later had no qualms silencing him when he attempted to reply to Cusack's accusations of incompetence.

Demon King

At first, Meliodas appeared to have been favored by the Demon King above his brothers, with the Demon King considering him the only worthy heir to the throne of the Demon Clan. The fact that he was taught Admonition, which only Zeldris, the King's representative, has learned, further shows the Demon King trusted and was fond of Meliodas. Meliodas himself was at first quite devoted to his father, as his emotions would later say that while he considered the war between the Demon and Goddess Clan to be foolish, he still carried out his duties fatefully, doing battle each and every day and night. However, after falling for Elizabeth, he finally betrayed the Demon King, losing any loyalty to his father and earning the King's anger. As Meliodas continued to relentlessly defy his father and the laws of the Demon Clan, the Demon King would became so enraged by Meliodas' actions against his clan that he finally choose to personally confront Meliodas and Meliodas himself fought to kill but try as he may, he was no match for his overwhelmingly powerful father and the Demon King first brutally beat him to a bloodied state before he ruthlessly killed him and cursed him with Immortality, suffering his father's terrible punishment, which is him and Elizabeth seperated due to the Supreme Deity's Curse. Ever since then, Meliodas has hated the Demon King strongly and while the Demon King still holds a grudge even centuries after, Meliodas' resentment is much greater and remains as strong as ever. When they met after Meliodas was killed by Estarossa in Purgatory, Meliodas took time to bluff of the advantages of his curse at his father to mock him and was immediately sent to a rage when the Demon King provoked him by revealing that due to the Curse, he is able to eat on Meliodas' emotions and on his desire to revert him back to the demon he once was. Even when he finally decided to become the new Demon King, he still despises his father, scornfully passing a word of defiance through Hawk. Despite the strain and antagonism between them, Meliodas' emotions ironically once called Demon King Dad, implying that he still recognizes him as his father despite all that happened between them to an extent but he is fully willing to deny this, as shown by how he coldly told the King that he no longer considered him his father. Meliodas also could not understand why the King always called him a failure and when finding out it is because the Demon King believed he is the destroyer, he quickly fired back by saying how the King is the destroyer himself. He also openly acknowledges his father's surpassing powers, as he admits that even he with all his tremendous power and skill was powerless before the Demon King when they fought and was willing to admit that even if he were to take the power the King gave Zeldris, he still is grossly outclassed by his father, but this does not mean Meliodas fears the Demon King, as shown when he battled him with no hesitation when he and the Supreme Deity came to punish him and Elizabeth and later on fearlessly charged at him when they met in Purgatory and seems to enjoy defying his father, as he took time to mock the King that he is not the one who decides who leaves Purgatory.

Vampire Clan

Gelda

Meliodas is aware of Zeldris and Gelda's relationship and when still the leader of the Ten Commandments, seems to have approved of their relationship, not asking why Zeldris cares so much for her out of respect for their love for each other. However, it was only after he met Elizabeth that he would finally understand how it felt. Meliodas is indirectly responsible for the separation of Gelda and Zeldris, as it was his betrayal that made the Vampires rebel. Because of this, Zeldris lost all respect and care for Meliodas. Meliodas himself feels guilt and remorse for how tragically Zeldris and Gelda's relationship ended and blamed himself for it. When they met again, Meliodas trusted her enough to hear her out out of sympathy with her for her pain as he was the one who caused her separation from Zeldris and he granted her wish to die. It is implied that Meliodas as the Demon King can somehow revive Gelda, which he uses to get Zeldris on his side as it is implied that this is Zeldris' wish. It seems that Meliodas would do anything to fulfill said promise, possibly due to his guilt of causing their separation, as he said that he will keep it no matter what.

Goddess Clan

Elizabeth

Meliodas and the goddess Elizabeth met and fell in love with each other, so much so that he betrayed the Demon Clan for her. Elizabeth is seen to be attached to Meliodas and care for him greatly; she would risk disagreeing with Ludoshel and standing in the way of the Ten Commandments in order to protect him, claiming that she would fight all of them by herself if they attempted to hurt him. Meliodas would do anything for Elizabeth as when he put his hands through a special barrier created by the goddesses that burnt away at his arms. He also has her back while she attempts to purify Indura Derieri and Monspeet, standing in the way of Ludoshel when he attempts to kill the demons instead. Their love for each other was so great that they continued their relationship despite the laws of their clans and the fact their overwhelmingly powerful parents in their furious rage would kill them, even going as far as facing them in battle. Despite their efforts, they were completely outclassed by the gods and were quickly killed and suffered punishment crueler than death. After getting revived by his curse and seeing Elizabeth's dead body, Meliodas cries in grief and later promises her he would break the curse at all costs.

Trivia

  • Meliodas, in Arthurian legend, was famous as the father of Tristan and as one of the Knights of the Round Table.
  • According to the databook(s):
    • Meliodas' special skill is molesting Elizabeth.
    • His hobby is collecting ale.
    • His daily routine is sexually harassing Elizabeth.
    • His weakness is Elizabeth.
    • He was born in the Demon World.
    • His dream is to remove the curse on him.
    • His greatest regret is having been unable to save...
    • His greatest shame is his past self.
    • The thing he wants to do the most is to cuddle with Elizabeth.
    • His favorite animal is Elizabeth.
    • His favorite smell is Elizabeth's body.
    • His favorite food is pork simmered in ale.
    • His charm Point is his ahoge (the little strand of hair on his head that sticks up).
    • He has no complex.
    • The person he respects the most is Captain of Leftovers (joking).
    • The person he does not want to make an enemy of is Merlin.
  • Meliodas has a good collection of alcohol, having traveled through a large number of locations.[86]
  • Although his cooking seems and appears to be delicious, it is actually very disgusting.[87] It was revealed that the reason Meliodas' food tastes terrible is that he does not care about the customers' feelings toward his meal.
  • Ban has arm wrestled Meliodas 720 times, which resulted in one of them getting 361 wins. Both of them argue as to who it is that has won the greater number of times[88]
  • It was believed that Meliodas was the first to discover and acquire the power of the Demon Blood.[89] This, however, was untrue; his demonic powers are natural.
  • Meliodas never wields a real sword because he is far too powerful to an extent where no one has ever come out unscathed after fighting with him.[90]
  • Meliodas has two rooms in the Boar Hat - one in the first floor and the other one upstairs with Elizabeth.
  • Meliodas is left-handed.
  • Meliodas black mark resembles the single spiral, which represents ethereal energy radiating out.
  • The Sin of Wrath is usually symbolized by a Bear and the color red.
  • In the Nanatsu no Taizai Popularity Poll, Meliodas was placed 5th overall with 6664 votes (which included an online poll as well as postcards) and placed 1st (278 votes) when considering only postcards.
  • The tattoo of a dragon or snake eating its own tail represents Ouroboros. A cyclical symbol and in some beliefs represents infinity. A reference to Meliodas' longevity and youthful appearance despite being over 3000 years old.
  • Despite demons normally living for approximately 1000 years, Meliodas has managed to live for over 3000 years, without aging and without being sealed, as a result of a curse that was placed on him that keeps him from dying.
  • Meliodas and Eren Yeager from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) have the same voice actors in both Japanese and English version.
  • It was stated by Zaratras and shown that Meliodas rarely ever gets drunk and can easily sober up if he does.
  • Meliodas is the oldest, in terms of age, out of high-ranking demons, Meliodas is the only one not seen constantly with his demon mark. Gowther does not count because he is actually a doll.
  • Both Meliodas and Zeldris are voiced by Yūki Kaji.
  • As a child, Meliodas had a power level of 300.[91]

Quotes

  • (To Golgius) "Do not make light of my eyes that can spot exposed panties from a mile away."[92]
  • (To Elizabeth Liones) "Even if you were to die... I would fulfill the promise I made with you."[93]
  • (To Elizabeth Liones) "All people eventually die. But... as long as someone protects what that person stood for, their principles will never die."[94]
  • (To Cain) "I did everything that I could to protect them all... I wanted to protect everything. But... I couldn't. That is my Sin. And that is why I cannot fail this time!!"[95]
  • (To Arthur Pendragon) "Arthur!! What's important... isn't what others think of you... but how you feel towards them!"[96]
