Introduction |
Mertyl「マートル」 is King and Diane's eldest adoptive human son and a prince of the Fairy Realm. He was swapped with their biological child, Nasiens, soon after birth, making him a Changeling.
Appearance[]
Mertyl is a young man with medium-length dark blue hair, green eyes, a muscular build. His facial features appears to be more adult-ish than the rest of his family.
He wears a long-sleeved white shirt with a high collar, burgundy pants, and burgundy men's flats. Behind his shirt, he has a scabbard for his sword.
Personality[]
Unlike his parents and most of his siblings, Mertyl seems to have a great deal of contempt and disgust towards Humans who commit crimes against Giants and Fairies, most notable towards the pain and loss of his parents' best friends: Helbram and Matrona, both events which took place long before his birth. However, he doesn't seem to acknowledge that Helbram murdered countless innocent Humans for over five centuries, even trying to murder his mother to spite King; with Matrona still alive, saved by a Human, who would then become her husband and the stepmother of his children.
However, he still has no wish to cause greater conflict with Humans either, preferring relations stay at least peaceful, even showing hatred and disgust towards a Fairy who kidnapped a Human baby, and then swapped them with a Fairy baby. Above all, Mertyl considers himself very dedicated to protecting his family, his territory, and the laws established by his father.
But, his desire to keep Humans from his parents and family seems to stem from the fact that Mertyl is aware he isn't their real child, fearing that their real child will return. A fear that has followed him throughout his life of not resembling either King or Diane and even being unable to live normally in the Fairy Realm, even being teased about it.
But despite his serious and strict personality, Mertyl is also a kind, responsible and dedicated person who cares a lot about others, always being willing to help those in need.
Mertyl also seems to recognize his mistakes and be understandable in apologizing to Nasiens for being mean to them over the past two years.
History[]
As a baby, Mertyl was swapped for Nasiens and started living in the Fairy Realm, believing he was the eldest biological child of King and Diane. Because of that, not only he was affected by the atmosphere of the kingdom and needed to consume special pills, but the local fairies would sometime ask him if he was really the king and queen's son, much to his frustration.
Plot[]
Fairy Realm arc[]
When Nasiens arrives in the Fairy Realm, Mertyl is both surprised and worried after noticing the resemblance Nasiens has to his father. Because of that, unlike the rest of his family, Mertyl rejects Nasiens under the guise of his hatred toward humans.
During a meeting between Nasiens and his family, Mertyl states everything the Humans did toward the races of the Fairies and the Giants. However, it would be interrupted by some Fairies, who would alert that they found a Changeling, to which Mertyl would quickly go to the scene.
At the moment Naisens arrives at the place with Tioreh, Mertyl threatens Puck with his sword but is interrupted by Nasiens, who asks him to leave the naughty Fairy.
An angry Mertyl would fight against Nasiens, who would use some needles enchanted with their technique Enchant: Henbane, but it had no effect, so Mertyl gave them a strong kick in the chest. Mertyl would receive the attack from his sister "Boar Sin".
Mertyl agrees to find the baby's parents when Naisens and Tioreh leave, Mertyl kicks Puck a little, who is on the ground scared, asking to show him where the family is and threatening that if he runs away he will kill him.
Minutes later he would return with Puck and the baby, but at that moment he would remember his past and childhood, where the Fairies said that he did not look like Diane and King, and also the fact that he gets sick or coughs and has to take pills from time to time. Beginning to doubt if he is a Fairy or not, and if he is Human and that Nasiens is a Fairy, son of King
Suddenly, Puck start convulsing and foaming out of his mouth, and even the baby Fairy seemed to be affected by something too.
The cause was the incense released by a mysterious hooded Chaos Knight, who sees Mertyl and asks if he is Human. Upon asking his identity and revealing himself to be a servant of Arthur Pendragon, Kilbeggan says that they should unite as humans against the other races, but Mertyl declines, declaring himself the eldest son of King and Diane of the Seven Deadly Sins. When Mertyl asks him the reason for his presence there, Sixtus suddenly arrives, and, having read Kilbeggan's mind, says that the invader is after the Drug of Yore.
As they return to the Fairy Realm, Mertyl asks Sixtus about the Drug of Yore, to which Sixtus, mocking his poor memory, tells him what his father told them about the sacred medicine. After returning the baby fairy that Mertyl had recovered, Sixtus is pleased by how grateful the fairies were to Mertyl, but Mertyl says that he would rather be a fairy or giant. Sixtus then convinces him to go talk to his father to let him use the Drug of Yore. On the way, Mertyl talks about how much he suffers from not being anything like his parents like the rest of his siblings, wondering if his father would let him have something so precious just so he can adapt to the Fairy Realm, but Sixtus tells him what a father he is without a doubt the kindest king.
However, the two discover King offering the Drug of Yore to Nasiens, which leaves Mertyl deeply sad. As he runs away and begin to release his frustration, Kilbeggan senses the fury of Mertyl, and he goes to where he is, offering to join him in exchange for giving him a little power, Mertyl distrustfully rejects the offer, but Kilbeggan removes his hood revealing his appearance, explaining what they have in common since they both were rejected by their people. The magician explains to Mertyl that Arthur is looking for the Drug of Yore, an elixir that cures any illness, and to do so they need to enter the realm of the Fairies, to which Mertyl accepts the deal and Kilbeggan brings his hand to him to shake it and give it power.
After accepting the deal with Kilbeggan, Mertyl finds Tioreh walking alone in the forest, so she tells Mertyl that he is very kind to everyone and that she knows all of his good qualities. She asks if he is still her big brother no matter what. However, Mertyl, who was being controlled, grabs her by the neck and begins to choke her. Nasiens appears and throws a smokescreen at Mertyl, causing him to release Tioreh. She tells Nasiens to be careful as Mertyl was not in his normal state. Upon seeing Mertyl defeating Nasiens, Tioreh becomes desperate and begs him to stop. Soon after, King appears and restrains Mertyl, saying that this is not like him. Right behind King, Diane arrives accompanied by her children. Hearing his father's statement, Mertyl asks him if he would rather he shut up and continue fawning over his father and mother instead, or continue pretending to be strong in front of his siblings, or be twisted with anxiety only to find out that he was a Changeling. Upon hearing this, Diane cries and apologizes to Mertyl, saying she did not know he was suffering so much. However, King and Sixtus read his mind and see that he does not want to say or do any of that. Then King grabs Mertyl with his giant bear and uncovers Kilbeggan and the Chaos Knights. So King tells them to be ready to face the consequences for invading the Fairy Realm and for what they did to Mertyl.
Seeing Mertyl, Kilbeggan tells him to express all the darkness in his heart. Therefore, Mertyl asks Diane if she really loves him, to which she replies yes. Upon hearing this, Mertyl calls her a liar and says that his father gave the drug to Nasiens and not him, and says that he is sure that she is just like him. Mertyl transforms and says they all abandoned him. Being completely out of control, Mertyl begins destroying everything around him, including King's giant bear. Seeing this, his siblings use their powers to restrain him, but to no avail. Diane steps in front of her children and tells them to back off, because stopping Mertyl is a mother's job, so Mertyl starts attacking and hurting her. Seeing her son's suffering, Diane approaches Mertyl and asks him to listen to her. Diane hugs him and says that, when she and King had their first child, they were victims of a Changeling, and even though they searched hard they never found their biological son. Diane says she was heartbroken, not because Mertyl was a human, but just because her son disappeared, but as she raised Mertyl her feelings changed. She then confesses that she and King wanted Mertyl to have a healthy life, so King immediately gave Mertyl the Drug of Yore to take, but it did not work. Diane also says that at one point, she and King just gave up on sending Mertyl back to the human world, after all this whole time he was their son. With that, Mertyl returns to normal and says crying that he did not care what he was and that he just wanted to be King and Diane's son and for everyone to be a family. Mertyl apologizes to Diane and she thanks him for returning to normal.
Mertyl begins to feel unwell due to the atmosphere of the Fairy Realm. Seeing this, his siblings quickly come over to help him, but he tells them not to worry about him and that they should take care of Diane, while blaming himself for what he did to her. Diane tells him not to blame himself and that all the scars she carries because of her children would never hurt her. A little later, Mertyl starts coughing and when Diane asks if he still has his pills, he replies that he lost them in the fight. Next, Diane says that she needs to find King to get more pills for Mertyl and release the Pollen Garden it contained trapping Nasiens and Tioreh. Diane tells Mertyl to wait with Nasiens and Tioreh, while she goes after King and his siblings go after Sixtus.
While feeling ill, Mertyl tells Nasiens that he has treated them badly since they arrived in Fairy Realm, even trying to kill them, then says that he has no idea how to apologize to them, to which Nasiens says they do not care, as long as he apologizes to Tioreh, since she loves him. Mertyl asks Tioreh if she will forgive him, to which she says she will if he makes peace with Nasiens. Suddenly, Diane, with King on her shoulder, runs past them telling them to wait a little longer as she has to help Sixtus. Tioreh asks Mertyl if it was her father who was on Diane's shoulder, to which he replies that she passed by too quickly to see it. Mertyl laments and wonders what he will do if something happens to Sixtus. Suddenly, Pollen Garden falls apart, freeing Nasiens and Tioreh. Mertyl, together with Nasiens and Tioreh, run to the throne. Meanwhile, during the battle between King and Worreldane, the Spirit Spear Chastiefol gets redirected by the enemy, causing the spear to head towards directly Mertyl and the others. However, Nasiens somehow manages to stop Chastiefol at the last second. Upon seeing Nasiens controlling Chastiefol, Mertyl and Tioreh are shocked, making Mertyl wonder what Nasiens is. As soon as King knocks out the enemy, Mertyl praise his father for his victory.
After Worreldane is defeated, Nasiens heals the injuries of Diane and her children, even easing Mertyl's cough fits. Nasiens says they can only relieve Mertyl's coughs temporarily. Tioreh says to Mertyl that they will have to collect more mullein later and that she will help him. After seeing Nasiens being able to control the Spirit Spear, Sixtus states that he thought he would be the next Fairy King after his father, but as the Sacred Tree chose to help Nasiens, they must be chosen to be the fourth Fairy King, after all, they are his older sibling. Upon hearing this, Nasiens says that Sixtus is wrong and that his older brother is Mertyl. Hearing this, Mertyl says that Nasiens does not need to be polite to him, so Nasiens says that is not it and that the point is that there is no proof that they are King and Diane's child and that their only family is Ordo and Dolores, which makes everyone very sad. Mertyl asks his father how he will return to his normal self, to which King replies that this is not the kind of thing that will pass with time and that Kilbeggan sacrificed his life for this curse.
Moments later, while Nasiens was suggesting to talk to Hendrickson about how to break King's curse, they are pierced by Worreldane's magic beam, who somehow survived the previous attack. Worreldane shoots many Shock Stinger beams, piercing Mertyl and the rest of his family. However, when Percival comes back to life, he heals the injuries of the rest of her family.
After Percival and King defeat Worreldane, it is time for Nasiens and Percival to leave for Britannia. Mertyl, alongside all of his siblings, tells Nasiens that all of their brothers and sisters would be waiting for them whenever they decide to return.
Abilities/Equipment[]
As a Human living in the Fairy Realm, he trained himself to become strong enough to be considered the son of King and Diane, something which afforded him notable combat and sword skill, proving himself capable of beating Nasiens in battle. Mertyl's physical abilities are high enough to manage to arrive near the borders of the Fairy Realm, where he and his family were having a meeting without seeming exhausted from running there despite the distance.
Abilities[]
- Poison Resistance: Due to Mertyl living inside the Fairy Realm since childhood, whereas most Humans could visit, even by taking the Mullein Pills, he developed a greater resistance to poisons compared to an average Human. As such, he was almost entirely unaffected by a double dose of poison from Nasiens' Mix Venom's Enchant: Henbane, something which has affected other stronger Holy Knights.

Mertyl carries a sword and demonstrates good use of it, being able to disarm Nasiens in battle. He also has a thorny whip and has shown himself to be very good at using it, managing to destroy several trees around him.

However, Mertyl was deeply saddened when his father gave the Drug of Yore to Nasiens instead of giving it to him, who was raised as his own son.
