Tristan closely resembles both of his parents. He has the same face and hairstyle as Meliodas, although his hair is long and silver like Elizabeth's. He has heterochromia, his right eye being blue like Elizabeth's and his left green like Meliodas's.

At age 16, he is taller than both his parents and wearing a blue earring closely resembling Elizabeth’s on his right ear.

Upon his introduction in The Four Knights of Apocalypse, he wears a collared cyan button-up suit under similarly colored gloves, as well as silver boots and a chestplate baring a golden crest. Over all of this, he wears a baggy, yellow button-up jacket with thick white lining and an orange crest, worn with only the topmost button done. Before leaving Liones, Tristan receives a new outfit composed of a white shirt with turquoise edges on the sleeves and collar frills topped with a winged brooch, black pants and golden armor on the right leg and foot.

When using his Goddess Powers, he gains a triskelion in both eyes. He then can gain Goddess wings for flight.

When fully using his Demon Powers, his eyes turn jet-black, with branch-like lines coming from them, and a large black mark on his forehead in the shape of a 4-pointed star. While less used, he can then also gain demonic wings for flight.

It has also been shown that he can activate both his goddess powers and demon powers at the same time, resulting in his left eye being completely black and his right having a triskelion in it. While not always the case it has been shown that the left eye can begin to have dark lines coming from it.[10]

Personality

Tristan is a very energetic and tenacious boy. He expresses no appreciation about the role of prince, instead preferring to defend his kingdom as a Holy Knight.[11] He holds a great sense of justice and feels the need to protect his kingdom any threats, including his father and the Seven Deadly Sins for their framed actions. Tristan is later presented with the story of the Sins, and aspired to follow the heroic footsteps of his father.

After accidentally injuring Lancelot with his Demon power[12], Tristan developed distaste for violence and the said power, and by extension any association with it or even being compared to his father at it. Instead, Tristan becomes more of a pacifist like his mother, and enjoy any comparison to her. He also prefers using his Goddess power during combat. Nevertheless, he is not hesitant to use force when need arises.[13]

Tristan is extremely avoidant of ever using his Demon power. Without Lancelot around as the only one he trust that can stop himself[14], he would opt to use only his Goddess power, or both Demon and Goddess powers at the same time, despite the disadvantages. While using only Demon power, Tristan loses control over himself, becoming more violent and quickly losing the ability to converse reason, even throwing tantrums against his father.[15]

Abilities/Equipment

As the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth, and perhaps especially as the grandson of the Supreme Deity and the Demon King, Tristan has possessed above average combat skills since the age of 10, both with bare hands or with a sword. Even Gowther finds he possesses an impressive Power Level for a boy of his age.[16]

At age 16, his fighting skills seem to have greatly improved. He is also shown to have inherited Goddess powers from his mother and Demon powers from his father, which he can manifest either separately or simultaneously.[17]

Abilities

  • Nova新星ノヴァNova」: Tristan's inherent magic power.
  • Ark聖櫃アークĀku; literally meaning "Holy Chest"」: As a descendant of the Goddesses, Tristan is able to generate and manipulate "Divine Light" in the form of particles capable of disintegrating anything they touch, which is particularly effective in Demons and Vampires, but not Chaos Magic.[18]
  • Full Counter全反撃フルカウンターFurukauntā」: Allows Tristan to reflect magic attacks used against him towards the opponent, but with more or less Magic Power.[19] Initially, Tristan could only use it to return magical attacks with only half their initial magnitude.[20] However, over the years, Tristan has become capable of using Full Counter just as well as his father.[21]
  • Power of Darkness: As a descendant of Demons, Tristan can manipulate their Dark Magic for various purposes, such as increasing his physical power. However, Tristan states that the time he can use it is limited, and that he doesn't like to use it because it can make him lose control of his actions and then find it difficult for him to go back.[22][23] In this state, Tristan is able to rip parts of Melagaland's body with ease, whereas before none of his attacks or those of the other three Knights of the Apocalypse had barely done anything to him.[24][25] He had even been able to repel Melagaland's Meifu no Bansan by his magic aura alone.[26]
    • Hellblaze獄炎ヘルブレイズHerubureizu; literally meaning "Hellfire"」: Tristan can also tap into the Flames of Purgatory and project them into inextinguishable black flames capable of piercing Meragaland's body.[27]
    • Dark Snow黒雪ダーク・スノウDāku Sunou; literally meaning "Black Snow"」: Tristan generates and disperses countless compressed dark particles before propelling them against the opponent. Unlike those of the Gray Demons, this Dark Snow do not seem capable of killing or decomposing with simple contact. In reality, Tristan's use of it is much more similar to Meliodas' Trillion Dark.[28]
    • Annihilation消滅領域アナイアレイションAnaiareishon; literally meaning "Area of Extinction"」: Tristan combines his Falling Star with his Dark Snow, causing both forces to cancel out each other and cause a chain explosion that erases matter regardless of their magic resistance or physical durability.[29]
  • Slash Canon正邪の追走曲スラッシュ・カノンSurasshu Kanon; literally meaning "Canon of Right and Wrong"」: Tristan assaults the opponent with a multitude of lightning-fast sword swings that end up triggering an explosion.[30]
  • Flight: As a descendant of the Goddesses, Tristan can deploy two pairs of ethereal white-feathered wings allowing him to move through the air. Its feathers turn black when it deploys its Dark Magic.[31]

Weapons

It is stated that Tristan possesses several swords.[32]. Among them are two of his top favorite, which he dual wields.

  • "Mael"「マエル, Maeru」, a sword with a Goddess inspired design, very light to wield and enchanted by Thetis to make Tristan less susceptible to enemy mental attacks.[33]
  • "Estarossa"「エスタロッサ, Esutarossa」, a sword with a Demon inspired design, very heavy to wield and enchanted by Thetis to increase Tristan's magical defense, as well as the success rate of his attacks.[34]

Relationships

Family

Meliodas

Meliodas is Tristan's father. At first Tristan considered him a short, irresponsible and alcoholic person who touches Elizabeth's breasts every day, but after witnessing the real story of the Seven Deadly Sins from Gowther, he comes to respect him as a hero and desires to become one of the Seven Deadly Sins. As he gets older, he seems to harbor resistance to using his demonic powers and is happy when an enemy says he and his father are not alike. Tristan was shown to be somewhat jealous of the trust and respect Meliodas shows Lancelot[35], when fighting against King Arthur.

Elizabeth Liones

Tristan is shown to have a close and loving relationship with his mother as he trusts her by confiding in her when he believes his father and the other Sins to be evil traitors. He also seems to be overjoyed when Chaos Melascula compared him to her[36]. Tristan is also shown to be curious about his mother's past and wanting to know about the origins of her nickname "Bloodstained Ellie"[37]. He also displays favoritism towards and comfortableness with his mother's powers.

Holy Knights of Liones

Isolde

Tristan cares about her but is unaware of her implied feelings for him. Tristan thinks she's earnest and straightforward.[38]

Four Knights of the Apocalypse

Percival

The two have shown to have a friendly bond with each other. When the two first met, Percival had lost control of himself after the Tristan Platoon was attacking his friends, deeply wounding them. When Tristan saw this, not knowing the full situation, they tusseled and, during their fight, he thought Percival might be a demon due to the language he was speaking, but he ruled it out after Percival was not affected by his Ark. After he was brought back to his senses by his friends and the situation got explained, Tristan and Percival started bonding, acknowledging each other's abilities and potential, learning more about each other, and fighting alongside each other. Following the fight in Liones, they have become comrades and protect each other.

After Percival's sacrifice, it appears that Tristan had a kind of anger towards him, considering his departure to be selfish and an abandonment of responsibility.

Lancelot

Tristan and Lancelot have a difficult relationship. Since they were children, both have shown a few rivalry. But after Tristan lost control of his demonic powers when they were kids and attacked Lancelot by surprise, causing an injury to his forehead, this led to a temporary stagnation in the relationship between them, especially after Lancelot disappeared for three years, but this matter was settled after their mission in Edinburgh, as Lancelot explained to Tristan that he would help him whenever he got out of control.

Tristan shows mixed feelings of affection, admiration, envy and aspiration towards Lancelot, while Lancelot.

Gawain

Tristan has been shown to be friendly towards her and knowledgeable of exactly what to say to cheer her up by reinforcing her belief that she is the strongest. The two have had their disagreements especially when it comes to dealing with an enemy and again when Gawain attacked Percival.

Trivia

  • Tristan was one of the more notable members of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. He was the son of King Meliodas and his first wife Elizabeth. He is well known for being an excellent archer with his bow Failnaught, and especially for his tragic romance with Iseult.
  • Tristan is ambidextrous.[39]
  • Despite being initially stated by the author that the Nanatsu no Taizai series sequel (Four Knights of the Apocalypse) would be centered around Tristan, as of the initial arc, a new original character was introduced as the main character instead. However, despite not being the protagonist, Tristan is featured within this main group, as well as being a key focus in the both the prophecy and the story as a whole.
  • Although Tristan and Lancelot were born 2 years after the Holy War, they are confirmed to be 16 years old even though it's only been 16 years since the Holy War as of 4KOA; meaning there are time discrepancies and contradictions in which they should either currently be 14 years old, since it has only been 16 years since the Holy War, or the Holy War should be 18 years ago to coincide with how they are 16 years old.[40]
  • Tristan favorite food is the fish pie made by the Yawn of the Black Cat tavern, same as Zaratras.
  • Between himself, Percival, and Lancelot, he was hesitantly and unconfidently ranked the best at arm wrestling.[41]
  • Tristan has been fed his father's home cooking against his knowledge time and time again.[42]
  • Tristan is also bad at cooking like his father, Meliodas.[43]
  • He never fixed his habit of saying "Daddy" and "Mommy", but he started trying to at age 14.[44]
  • He calls Bartra, "Gramp... Grandfather".[45]
  • Tristan is set on not letting his mother, Elizabeth help his father, Meliodas in the Boar Hat Inn.[46]
  • Tristan is not ranked when it comes to the list of who's the best at cooking.[47]
  • Tristan was technically in The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, albeit not confirmed yet by his parents; since it takes place five months before the Epilogue arc
  • Tristan names his notable possessions with the same name as several notable figures from his father's stories.
    • His horse is named "Escanor".[48]
    • His two top favorite swords are named "Mael" and "Estarossa".
